So, once again I must call upon the advice of the more experienced and wiser than I. I need help convincing my dad of investing in a BTS transmission for any of our construction trucks, but preferably mine Any convincing arguments, recommendations, or personal experiences would be awesome, Thanks!
I am no expert but this is what convinced me, they use BTS transmissions in almost every high horsepower application 7.3 meaning its gotta be pretty darn reliable for that level of performance..... but thats not the only thing, when most of our stock transmissions go, a lot of people invest in a BTS, and i can personally say that I have never heard a single negative comment about a BTS transmission its going to feel better and perform better then the original and take a lot more abuse. and about the only way to break them is if you like to make over a 1000 hp. when I get my build done on my truck, it will have a BTS transmission in it. I think if your dad called and talked to brian himself, thats all the convincing he should need.
This is a tough sell, and near impossible if there are no issues with the transmission now. If you are getting a lot of slip, then it's time to replace it. There have been a lot of advances in the transmission since they were manufactured 13 years ago, when it was the big boy on the block... but even then, it was not up to the task. BTS, John Wood, and even the HD4R100 is a huge improvement over the original 4R100. In the 5th-wheel world (and others who tow heavy), there are two types of Ford Superduty owners - those who have a BTS, and those who want a BTS.
The cost of paying a little extra for the right tool for the right job is nothing, compared to the down time. He already knows this - if he was OK with cheaper... he would have bought F150s back then. The 4R100 was designed pre-Superduty... the others I mentioned became necessary shortly after the Superduty (with added weight and power) hammered the heretofore less-stressed 4R100. The HD4R100 is a Ford product (mine was installed by the dealer with a 3-year warranty), and it was inspired by JW and BTS. Even Ford acknolwedges the shortcomings of the 4R100.
Your dad will care most about ROI - Return On Investment. This would put the transmission issue to bed... extending the life of the trucks. This, in turn, prevents the need to kick some tires on diesels with all the fuel emission crap that skyrockets cost of ownership.
My story makes me sick in the stomach to even try and recall, but when my stock trans blew I had a local shop rebuild it for $2500, three transmissions later ( all warrantied) it started slipping again. A warranty is great if it breaks "in warranty" but how many times do you want to be inconvenienced and without your truck.
Ford wanted $3300'ish IIRC for a reman, but the only way they would warranty it was if they installed it for an additional $1200. (3 yr, 100,000)
I tow heavy & I can't put a price on peace of mind. $4500 for a BTS with a LIFETIME warranty is a no brainer.
Bottom line, a BTS really doesn't cost that much when your getting every part replaced with over engineered parts that will likely never break. Instead of just new clutches and all of the old parts tossed back in.
You can stand right next to Brian as he builds your trans and he'll show you the difference between his parts and the stock wimpy parts. You'll walk out feeling very confident with his work and your trans.
I've never heard or read about anyone that regrets getting a BTS trans. Brian is not some generic transmission guy. He knows more about the 4R100 than the people that developed it!
30k miles on my BTS mostly pulling and no hiccup's.
ND is a big of a drive to either JW or BTS. so I dont think he will be able to watch it being built. but that would be cool if you could.
I have never owned either, but I am in the catagory that wish I had.
probably gonna have to get your dad involved in the research so he is more informed. he is the one spending the funds.
you of course will have to direct him to the right info and bragging of how these transmissions hold up. might have to get creative with bar graphs and pie charts maybe. hahahah

Oh boy hah, sounds like fun! Any idea where I could get like actual data that I could present in such a way. Well I guess i dont even know what kinda data I would present. I could do a pie chart of people with BTS or JW vs. people who want them? Haha that might work

that is kind of what I was thinking, as when I owned my truck it was gonna need a new tranny. sold it before I did though. it is hard to cough up the funds up front, but like said before it pays down the road.
not sure where you would get data, but I did hear of a story about BTS.
New customer with a new BTS tranny and he took it to the track to drag his truck.
Brian was in the stands watching the races and the tranny broke. then Brian took the truck back to his shop and fixed the transmission for no charge. not sure what was wrong, but the fact the guy watched him break it dragging and still stood by his product speaks volumes I think. BTS or JW are in the business to make money like anybody else. BUT, they make there money by more buying there tranny's and not doing warranty work. just a thought.
Good luck for sure. I sure would love to have one in my van I currently have, but I doubt it will ever see one at this point. to many other things to make right first.
