Finally finished installing 7.3 in my old 83 f-250. After buying the 7.3 used and unseen and many dollars later, after heads rebuilt I start it up and it runs like sh#!%, now I think my pump is no good!! Please give opinions on this, when started it misses and smokes like crazy and after warming up a little it gets better, but even after fully warmed up to temp I can hear a irradict puff puff at the tail pipe as it still misses a little even when I bring rpms up to about 1500. When I mash the throttle it breaks up and runs totally terrible and smoke pours out. and it idles loud. Is this bad pump or injectors or could it be something else??
its white smoke and smells like unburnt fuel, like if you try to start them cold without glow plugs. Even when warmed up it still smokes, not as much because it is firing more consistent and not missing as much. and when you mash the throttle it smokes heavy and like loses its firing order.
Have you doubled checked ALL of you fuel lines? Including return lines? Replaced the filter again? I am sure you put a new one on. If all of this checks out, start cracking injector lines til you find the problem. You know you found it when the truck doesn't change in how it sounds. Replace that injector or injectors. Check the oil and make sure fuel isn't getting in the crankcase too. If the injectors check out, then I would start looking at the Injection Pump.
It sounds to me that your pump timing is retarded, tilt the top of the pump a dimes width (in regards to the timing marks) to the right side of the truck, it should get better
Thank you 84-6.9L , I advanced the pump about a 1/8 of inch and WOW! completely different running engine. The timing marks on this pump were at 2 oclock position rather than at 12 oclock???? not sure if this is a original pump or not for 1991 7.3 but it is running good and I can get it to diesel shop for a proper timing, thanks!!

if you can find a shop with the correct tools still.if you can't don't pay them to time it by ear (cus you can,and just did that yourself.) here's the tools you can buy new, to do it yourself; https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...l#post12805393
