Ok, So last weekend I replaced my up pipes on my 2000 excursion with 210K miles on it. When taking everything apart I noticed that all 4 of the bolts that hold the turbo together (the exhaust housing to the compressor housing) were either loose or completely backed out. I then replaced the bolts and snugged the turbo back together. I put everything back together, finished installing the up pipes and then I went for a test drive. My boost level on my econo tune went from 20 lbs max (before the new up pipes) to 21-22 lbs max after the up pipes, however whenever the turbo begins to spin or when I shut the truck off I can hear a howl that I never had before. As soon as my ex begins to have any boost (1+ psi) the howl disappears. If I am at highway speeds (turning 1300+ rpm) coasting then I apply the throttle there is no howl, it seems to be at very low rpm with very little throttle. I checked for play in my turbo and I did not feel any (side to side or in and out). The howl is not very loud, if I have the radio barely on I can't hear the howl.
I have checked all my boots on my IC and everything I took apart. Am I missing something or is my turbo on its way out?
I can think of two possibilities, without having a vid to hear it:
One of your IC tubes are seated too deep into your upper boot, allowing it to vibrate against the hard-mounted spider.
Your intake sucks. Many people with 6637s (and the like) get a lot of noise from a properly-working turbo.
You ain't seen nuthin' yet. Take that red tube off the cylinder above the turbo (driver side). Shove the end of the red tube onto a boot clamp bolt to prevent air from leaking through the tube. Go for a drive, but take some extra chonies with ya.
Ehhh I'm betting its some frequency related vibration. I'd go back over everything and see if your new uppipes are touching the firewall anywhere, or your downpipe. If not that, then check intercooler pipes etc.
Lastly, forget the 20's for boost number. Havent experienced a permagrin until you catch 5th gear and hit 40psi of boost out of a s468 flowing right around 1350 CFM....That right there is a beautiful feeling.

I'll bet... but we mere mortals must get our thrills where we can.
