Checking the Turbo

I have a 94 F-350 7.3L Turbo IDI. It's low on power and I would like to test the boost pressure. If I install a boost gauge, what should it read at what RPM? Is there a bettter way to test it?

Checking the Turbo

It's not really RPM dependent, but more on how much your foot is in the throttle. I'm not sure what the numbers would be. You might check in the diesel forums.

Checking the Turbo

Looking only at boost will not tell you the condition of a turbo. Boost depends on other factors, like exhaust restriction, intake restriction, turbo size, engine load and rpm. A down and dirty way we used to check big truck, heavy equipment turbos is to take off the intake at the turbo. Look at the fins, they should all be dent free, they should also not look like they were sand blasted. grab the nut on the compressor shaft, there should be very little axial or lateral play. like .005" total in each axis. If possible check the turbine side for signs of oil consumption, or dented fins. Give the turbo a spin, it should spin freely with no wobble or tight spots. Lastly check all the housing, & mount bolts for tightness.
