I know this has been talked about before but for the life of me I can't remember what the outcome was and I tried going through old threads but couldn't find the info, so please bare with me.
I have an 01 PSD with a 4" exhaust, K&N air charger (do plan on getting something else) and use a Superchips programer. Every morning I have to climb a 7% grade and I usually do this in overdrive doing about 60 mph. This morning I was going up the grade (60 mph in OD) and suddenly I started getting a repeating whoosh whoosh noise from my turbo ( turbo surge?). I eased on the throttle and it went away. I gave the truck some juice and it came back. My boost gauge was reading about 15 psi and my egt (pre turbo) was about 1000-1100 deg. I usually run the truck on high performance, but today I had it in tow safe. Also yesterday I tightened up the boots and turbo exhaust outlet. The turbo is stock, and I have never had this occur before. Any ideas?
Thanks for your patience.
Ron W.
Welcome to turbo surge... A Wicked Wheel might fix it, a ATS housing will fix it. Some change the exhaust housing with one from Beans diesel performace with good luck.
i have a bad case of the surges as well. were can a guy find a wicked wheel? i been searching the sponsors.... also were can i find that over boost valve that bleeds off the excess boost the map dosnt like to see?
I got my ATS shroud housing from xtremediesel for $405 shipped. They offered free shipping, you can't beat that. Last time I spoke to them (Few weeks ago) they were about a month or so backordered on their WW. Very nice people to talk with.
www.dieselsite.com sells WW. I highly recommend them. They processed and shipped my WW so fast it was incredible. I only paid for regular USPS shipping and I ordered Thursday, it was shipped Friday and I received it Saturday. It shipped from FL to CA in one day.
My concern though is why this started happening when it has never done this before under the same conditions, except I was in tow safe instead of high performance. This tells me that something went wrong with my truck and I would rather get that fixed. Can my waste gate be the cause? On the big haul trucks we use at the mine a bad waste gate (yes, they have waste gates) will cause the same noise that my truck is doing.
The over boost valve, is that like the one sold by Pure Diesel Power, Map Dual Boost Relief Valve? I do have their boost tube on order. I noticed that Big Torque has one. Is there an increase in performance?
Thanks,
Ron W.
boost tube performance increase,,,,,,,,,,,,
not with normal driving,,,,,,,,,,but on the hammer about 60 mph it pulls way harder with it than with out, due to it keeping the wastegate closed longer.
im currently testing the fuel mileage aspect of it, with and with out, so far i have only seen a mear increase with out.
