transmission question

hi all. I have an earlly 1999 f-250 PSD and i have noticed that on the highway in O/D my torque converter doesnt unlock when i hit the brakes. also when i let off the fuel pedal should my truck coast? or should the torque converter stay locked so when even going down hill i have to keep my foot on it to keep speed?
I think this may be part of my other problem when im pulling a hill my torque converter likes to randomly unlock and try to relock but sometimes cant unless i llet off the fuel. especially when towing.
Thanks Brandon

i know the TQ stays locked down hill to help slow you.
how much are to towing and what temp is the trans when this happens?
the bigger tires will make it shift funny if not re-geared

well i had my small tires on it thinking it was my tires but it still does it.
i ussually tow my bronco so maybe a little over 10k with trailer and all camping gear.
my trans will usually get up to 140 pretty easily latly and thats with out towing. and its been getting worse and worse the (the heat and the Torque converter unlocking)
Should the torque converter even unlock without it coming out of overdrive? because ill be going up a hill (with out a trailer) and it will downshift than if i click the o/d button it downshifts more.

Yes, the torque converter will unlock in fourth gear. Some programs unlock the converter when you lift off the go pedal, some do not. Most unlock when you hit the brakes, a few do not.

Your first action should be to get the codes read. Don't go to an auto parts store, you need to pay someone. Either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer. If there are codes that will point us in the right direction to find out if something is wrong.

Without codes all you can do is buy parts and hope you find the right one.

Sorry took me so wrong to reply and I gave checked the codes my buddy has a modis scanner and found no codes. So If it unlocking in fourth gear is normal it just seems to do it a lot easier than it used to. Especially on higher tune settings. It doesn't have the pull it used to on the highway i used to be able to slowly lean into it and it would pull nice up to like 90 mph holding o/d but now it shifts down. It's just wierd to me
Thanks for all the help and the reply!
