I did some major damage to my closed knuckle Dana 44 front axle trying to climb a bank out of a deep mud hole recently. I snapped an axle shaft and broke the carrier casting in half. I really can't afford the Dana 60, so I am going to repair the 44. The front Dana 44 axle is not the original axle. The truck is a 72 F250, manual steering, closed knuckle low pinion/4.11 gears. When I go to the local auto parts stores for bearings and seals, everything they come up with is for the high pinion open knuckle Dana 44 like what comes stock on my 78 F150. Someone from a local Bronco club told me it was an axle from 1966?? Can anyone tell me what years the closed knuckle axles were available, so that the kids over at Napa can get me the right parts? Thanks!!
Dan
I have not ordered these parts yet to repair my Dana 44 (1971 F-100 closed knuckle - like a Bronco Dana 30 with the plates over the kingpin).
I give all credit to Jason Davis for passing along these numbers to me ( Thank You VERY much), which I believe are correct. I will let you know because I am ordering them today and should have them installed by next Wednesday, time permitting.
Federal Mogul (you need two of each to do a side)
BCA Bearing 11590
BCA Race 11520
National Seal 204005
If you search for "mini king pins" you will find a thread about how to change them out.
Thanks for the credit Rebcardo. Talking to parts houses (as you have found out), there is a definite gray area concerning these closed knuckle Dana 44's in our pickups. Those numbers were the correct ones for my application and the installation was fairly straightforward. The only thing I didn't do was to verify that I had the proper tension on the bearings via the shims you will find when you take the knuckle apart. I "assumed" it was shimmed correctly. I hate doing that, but I was under time constrants, and haven't had any problems with the repair.
Dana 44's came on many different vehicles.
I found parts for mine listed under a late 60's jeep wagoneer.
I believe Dodge trucks of that era also had Dana 44's in some applications
