Actually, that reminds me of the oil leak I had. JUST finished putting fresh, new gaskets on the entire engine. Actually took the engine out to do it. Everything was sealed up, put it in, started it up, and it leaked like a sieve! Pulled it apart and every single bolt hole on the timing cover had cracked and separated from the cover. Guaranteed it wasn't overtightened (at least not by me). I had to get a new timing cover. My guess is the previous owner damaged it, and then when I tightened it down again, it all broke. Hopefully that's the case, since that'd be a bit easier than the oil pan again.
Well I degreased the engine compartment real good last night and it was nice and dry this evening so I took it for a brief spin. I may still have a slight front cover leak but I'm 94% sure the cause of the oil bath is the oil pressure sender. I looked at it before but it didn't seem to be the problem. Now it looks to be the center of the mess. It's leaking onto the front driveshaft which explains the mess. I'll be 100% sure when I swap it out tomorrow.
The front seal and oil pan gaskets were definitely shot so no time/money was wasted.
I'll update one way or another tomorrow. Thanks for the tips y'all.
It took 1/2 an hour to swap out......couldn't get a wrench on the bolt. I had to take "extraordinary measures".
The sender was certainly the cause for most of the current trouble. There is still a small leak at the front but I'll deal with that when I have a bit of spare time.
So I can say that I am completely finished. If there is a leak from the rear main it is negligible and can wait. Everything else is now bone dry.I took it for a lengthy drive after getting it buttoned up just after midnight. I made a grim discovery earlier today.....the front cover was cracked in several places. While sitting it only seeped but after a quick jaunt the front of the engine was soaked. So I figure I had just about every possible oil leak. At least the block is good. To sum up......
Valve cover and pushrod cover gaskets were rotted
Oil pan leaking heavily from rear
Oil pressure sender cracked and spraying left side of engine, undercoating rest if truck
Front seal fell to pieces in my hand
Front cover cracked/bolt holes stripped
Balancer grooved
The only money I wasted was on the heli oils for the cracked front cover (golly those cracks looked like paint cracks....oh well) and a second set of oil pan/front cover gaskets. Not too bad. If I have to pull the oil pan again anytime soon I may cry.
BTW.....the PCV valve is new and the oil filler cap is an open breather. The breather lets out light puffs of smoke when revved. Not sure this matters but just additional info.
This is blowby, caused by the rings, etc in the engine not sealing properly.
And just because the PCV Valve is new, doesn't mean it's "Functioning".
