Finally been able to get back to this. Got the head and block surfaces clean, went to install the head gasket and damn, the alignment dowels are in the head, not the block. Didn't even notice while I was cleaning. Stuck in there too so of course removal ruined 'em.
FordPartsGiant had them in a four pack, which is good because I assume the other side's going to be the same way. Cost more for shipping and 'handling' then the parts did.
So, at a standstill, already, until they arrive. Could pull the other head while I'm waiting, we'll see what happens.
Work on this project has been slow. @ 90 to 110 degree days we've been having plus an unusually high humidity for the area doing extra work outdoors hasn't been much of an option. Plus other items have been taking priority.
I did get the other head off. There is no sign of that missing glow plug tip, nor any damage from it. Looks like it must have either disintegrated or the engine managed to pass it without damage.
Looks like I may have to change a precup though, I haven't cleaned it yet, but it looks like there's a crack right up to the fire ring.
I've had the IP setting on my workbench, the other day for giggles I cleaned the tag off it and found "TURBO" stamped on the Stanadyne tag. However looking up the model number tells me it's the correct pump for the truck:
DB2829-4541 04541 1807560C92 6.9 Liter 1986-87 Ford F Truck & E Van Superseded by DB2829-4746
Plus the 'TURBO' stamp looks like a hack job so I'm going to guess when the Hypermax system was installed the fuel in the IP was turned up making it a "turbo" pump. Wonder what they charged the customer to 'upgrade' the pump?
I bet it was rebuilt as a turbo calibrated it is common for rebuilders to restamp the tag. They can stick a lot of different stuff inside there to change the fuel curve and of delivery. They probably stamped it on there so nobody put it on an NA motor and burned it up.
Wow, six years later and I'm starting to put this thing back together. But somehow I'm sans some head bolts (5) and nearly all of the push rods (10). Anyone have some 6.9 hardware they can part with? I'll post in the parts wanted area too. TIA!
Not sure if you're turbo yet, or ever plan to be but head studs are only $250 for the 6.9 now. They used to be $450....
Also push rods would be cheap new and not a bad idea. Any machine shop can sell you pushrods by the .010" size increments.
Now that I'm turbo I really wish I would have studded it when I did the head gaskets. The power really wakes up around 10psi but I have to let out by 15, I've hit 20 a couple of times and I know they ain't gonna last like this..
I agree on push rods ... we made em any way you wanted. in my shop... but that was years ago too.....
aftermarket shoulder bolts shouldn't be hard to find.... we used to ream the heads and use oversized stretch bolts.... just re-tap the block.... you can stud too but really no gain when you select the right bolts....
Thanks guys, but I'm just scabbing this engine together. It's already got a turbo, probably why it blew the head gasket in the first place. But the engine's not in the best shape and I have a better one to go in later, but that later is unknown so I figured I'd throw the old one back together. So no real money going into this one, just head gaskets, oil, and the hardware. Might have to wait for Pick N Pull to get another IDI, they crushed them all recently. /
