Water pump was leaking pretty good after pulling the motor out of mothballs from 8 - 10 years of sitting. So I went to pull the water pump off for closer inspection, behind the water pump "in" the block there looks to be a brass insert that goes back in about 6" - 8" and is 1/2" wide 2" tall. It looks like somebody has buggered up the front part of the insert putting it in or trying to remove it. Does anybody know what this is for and was it original? It looks like it might be away to direct the water to the back of the block? Grandpa is in town and before i could get a picture of it he had straighten it out and put the water pump back on. I'm still curios about the part. Thanks for the hlep
I ran into the same thing. I guess it was an attempt to move the water around better. the casting leaves ridges and bumps around the path the water is supposed to take. I don't know if it worked, they are still well known for overheating. I added an electric fan behind the cowling (in front of the radiator) just to be sure.
Thanks NewOld, I like the idea of the extra fan, I'm going to have to think hard about adding that to the list of wants. I'm hoping to fire up the motor in the next day or two crossing my fingers everything goes well.
