390 build
Im trying to build my 390 this summer, for street/strip use. I want it to have alot of low end power but still be able to cruise down the freeway without blowing up.
So far what i got is my 390; extras include bored .30, HV oil pump, streetmaster intake (plan on going to performer), holley 600 cfm, petronix points eliminator, headers with dual exhaust, and a few not so important ad ons. right now im getting 10-1 compression. this is where i need help; i need a good cam kit to drop it. I want something beefier, all i got right now is stock. By kit i mean cam, lifters, and valve springs. I want a cam that can make a noticeable gain, sound good on idle, but not require i change out to much. Hoping to keep my rocker arm assembly stock, just swap out springs. I have a 500$ budget on the internals, and 75 goes for a gasket kit. I am thinking of changing out my main bearings and doing some oiling mods as well because i have low pressure, and i need a timing set, so let me know if you have a recommendation on bearings or timing chain set. Think i should upgrade my pistons?
Here is my second question. I have C4AE-G heads, i want to get ported to fit CJ valves. Also want some hardened seats put in. I live in the puget sound area, i know there are a few others on this sight from the western washington area. Anyone had a similar job done, and how much did it cost?
The engine only have 30-40k miles on it since rebuild, so im hoping i don't need any machine work done on the block. Just going to paint it up again and make it look nice.
my goal is to have all MSD ignition, performance intake, probably keep my holley, CJ valves in my heads, and then whatever cam kit you guys choose for me. My tranny might or might not need a stall converter, if it does for the kit you are going to recommend feel free to throw a link for a good torque converter you'd recommend as well my C6 ha s about 30-40k on rebuild as well, shift kit, high capacity pan, etc.
Throw your ideas at me!
I appreciate any and all help, and links to parts are much appreciated as well!
thanks,
Ashton
stock FE heads have good size valves and ports from the factory , so on your budget i'd say keep the heads stock
as for cam kits you can get a complete kit for about $500
I like Lunati cams

if so, we'll need to trim this down.
the FE will give you the low-end power. freeway cruising comes from rear end gears, not motor.
if you build for low end power you won't be needing a high-stall torque converter.

no im not saying my total is 575, i was saying my total for cam plus what ever internal engine parts you guys think i might get is 500. all the ignition plus porting etc is a seperate budget haha! do you really think edelbrock heads would be cheaper than getting a port job to flow pretty darn close to the aluminum heads? those things are expensive

you can go bigger on the cam but you'll loose torque and gain hp
to help build your engine go buy Desktop dyno 5 $49 on amazon . you can run all different kinds of option and see how much torque and hp .

As far as use- I want to build a street f100. Built with alot of hp and torque low/mid range but still be able to talk her on the free way. aiming to be able to keep it within idle- 5500 without detonation or other problems, 5000 would be fine too.
not a professional , just used my die grinder and some stone wheels and burrs .
