I have a 1975 F-250 Camper Special with a 360. From this site I have learned that I should be looking to rebuild it into a 390 by getting the 390 crank, port the heads and get oversized 428CJ exhaust valves, heavey duty valve springs, use a 600 vac Holley carb, use a Crane 343801? or 343802? cam, use TRW L2291F Pistons, Performer RPM intake manifold, do the oiling mods, restrict oil to rockers, use HV or HV/HP oil pump, and install a windage tray, the 427 oil filter adapter, and keep my stock ignition, and Stan's or Sanderson's headers.
Where are the best places to get parts? Can I get what I want from custom designed kits, or do I just have to pick sites and start picking out all the individual parts? Can you give specific web sites addresses?
Also, what do you think about the overall direction I am taking as far as the parts listed above. It is a work truck that I just want to be fast. I will pull stuff and only race out of stop lights for fun.
I am in the process of rebuilding my 390 in a 75 F250 4X4. I did not have much luck in locating a "kit" with the stuff I wanted. Jegs.com and summitracing.com have been my major sources. Stan's headers I bought direct from Stan's, I think his web address is stans-headers.com. As far as your choice of cams I'll let the other experts way in on that, I decided on the Edel Performer RPM for my rebuild, partly because of the "Edel Package", heads and manifold. There is a software called Desktop Dyno with an optional Cam disk that let's you run the numbers on a variety of combinations. I just got it, and it is pretty cool. I can't really vouch for it's accuracy, but it did match up pretty well with the advertised claims from Edelbrock. Since I started with a 390, I did not need a crank, but I hear Autozone has some pretty good deals. Godd luck on your project
Tom
Buy a rebuilt kit from Summit or Jegs. It should include the pistons, rods, crank, bearings, gaskets, oil pump, roller timing chain and gears. The other items are not part of a standard kit but again Summit or Jegs should have them except for the windage tray and oil fitler adapter. Get the cam and matching kit made by the cam vendor again from Summit or Jegs; the kit will come with the right valve springs etc.
