As some of you know, I want to eventually do a f350/ dt466 truck for a project. So, I always have my eyes out for medium duty stuff.
I found a 1994 international cab chassis truck, with a 466, for 2000$
It has an engine knock, and it is 1994, so I thought it was HEUI, so I assumed one of the injector o-rings was finished, but after seeing pictures, it is in fact mechanical, you can see the injector pump and all the lines.
Does that automatically mean the bottom end is finished?
If I could buy this thing, I'd have a TON of parts that would be useful for building a truck project.
A 466 non running core is at least 500$, and thats a complete crap shoot, plus shipping or gas to go get it.
A running core is about 1000$ - 1500$ plus shipping.
This seems like a great way to get a ton of parts.
Has anyone ever done a project like this?
Good idea? Or am I just going to buy a pile of garbage on wheels?
You might want to get a mechanics stethoscope and use it to pin down the knock. Up top it could be wrist pins, or something as simple as injection timing off. I you know a mechanic who has spent time with diesels, see if he could listen to it and give you an opinion.
On if you should get it, you will have to decide to the parts that you will get from it versus the effort and time to pull them is equal in value to or greater than the $2000 price. A place to do this at and enough time to do it also will figure in. Good Luck!
Can also be an injector blew off the tip and has the chunks smashing into the piston.
The 466E started in mid 95, but you could opt for mechanical up to 97.
Just looked at the ad. Its a late 93 DT360...not a 466

Wow, how did you know that just from the pics? haha.
Now, this is what I picked out of that one engine pic. There are more differences.
1. The 360 ended in late 93.
2. Valve cover is almost a foot below the cowl. A 466 is about 4 to 5 inches.
3. Intake inlet points down. A 466C intake point straight up and has a 3" inlet.
Aha, I did notice the air intake, I just was hoping it was a lucky fluke of some type, lol.
Do you think an entire vehicle is a good purchase for this kind of project?
I think it is, it would make sense to me anyways.
If a semi-running 466 (needing a rebuild) is about 1000$, trans are usually about 500$, how much extra is it worth to have the entire vehicle , you figure?
I'm working on my go-kart project to get the garage ready for the next project.
Picked up toyota drivetrain yesterday, gotta get the axles cut down to fit the 48" wide body.
I've seen cab n chassis IH trucks go for $3500...with a running, p-pumped 466. Pass on this unless you can pinpoint the knock and prove it can be a cheap fix.
