green been!!!!! so i still got it! shes drivin the truck since she works at the end of the street, and im drivin the blazer (money pit!!!! $600+ and counting...), but anyways refresh me please i still wanna change tranny fluid and filter since it shifts hard on rare occasions still. not nearly as much since shes drivin it, and she said thiers no slipping either....must like the way she drives it better i guess lol.. well how much fluid do i need, and whats the best "cheep" brand to use? filter part# ? and how do i drain torqe converter... and est. time to complete job? (not counting beer breaks lol)
and est. cost$$$$$$
Just go to your local auto parts store and they'll be able to get you the parts. Its not hard at all, but unless you have a large pan/bucket to catch fluid you'll make a good mess. All done with a cooled truck you could do it in an hour, taking your time and letting some RTV dry no problems. Make sure you wipe the magnet off and place it back in the same spot when you put the pan back on.
Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission .: Articles Here is an article on one way.
You can also drop the pan, clean it, replace the filter, replace the pan, open the drain on the torque converter and let it drain and then refill the system with fresh fluid.
For a fluid and filter change you will need around 18qts of fluid that meets Dexron3/Mercron specs.
Do you guys recommend a fluid change on a E40D that was known to previously slip ? I'm on the fence with this...
It prolly wouldnt hurt it anymore. If the clutches are so worn that it slips, nothing is really gonna help short of rebuilding the trans. If the trans is slipping then changing fluid prolly wont help it either.
