Which tuner to get?

I am thinking of getting a tuner for my truck. I have 2008 XLT 5.4L. I've been leaning towards the Edge CS Evolution, but might upgrade to the CTS Evolution. Now, I'm thinking of the Diablosport Trinity T-1000.

For the most part, I just do daily driving, but I do pull a 30' camper. I would like a tuner that will
  • Increase my overall MPG
  • Increase my MPG pulling the camper
  • Increase my power when towing the camper.
I would also like something that I can adjust on the fly if I need to. A couple of years ago we were up in the mountains of Wyoming and Montana. I wish that I had something that I could adjust on the fly do to the increase in altitude.

Of the three tuners that I'm currently looking at, the Diablosport Trinity T-1000 looks like its the best fit for my needs. However, when I read posts here, I get the sense that the Edge is the favorite tuner to the posters. Hell, it even has its own thread.

I would like some feed back on what other think of the Diablosport Trinity T-1000 and Edge tuners. Would I be making a mistake going with the Diablosport?

Thanks.

Daryl

Edge all the way!!!! Went from 17 MPG to 19-20 running tune 2 and sometimes better on tune 3. You'll pull the trailer a lot better. Before when I pulled a trailer with 3 horses I'd get 10, then on tune 2 I saw 13 and even though you shouldn't I was getting 15 on tune 3 ( all hand calculated) but I was keeping very close eye on temps. The display should be the biggest reason to get one because its so handy. Its the closets to being switch on the fly. You have to pull over for about 20-40 seconds with engine off to change tunes. HIGHLY recommend

Well I've had a Gryphon/Edge for three years now. The throttle response and shifting are much improved from stock, but...

The MPG display says I get 2 MPG more than pencil/math says (no real change in mileage from stock). This is true for all modes of driving, including towing. I've done several three tank tests in 87 tow, 91 performance, using "normal" gas and non-ethanol gas. No matter what, I got about the same mileage results. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with the tuner difference vs stock. My 4.6 4x4 responds better than my friends stock 5.4 2WD in all ways.

The ability to select a better transmission shift mode will be helpful if you do really tow a lot. Less stress on the transmission.

It was (and still is) very important that a person verifies that the “Tuner” is ASE certified in both ECM and Transmission programming and IMHO be have current certification by the OEM whose vehicle you want to modify. There are plenty of persons who advertise their programs to be the best and even offer custom tunes, but in all reality, very few actually have credentials in these areas- but that’s not to say that some of these “geniuses” haven’t really caused damage to a few vehicles- just jump over to flatratetech.com and read just some of the comments from the MSE techs!. Perhaps what is equally important is the parameters that can be adjusted are set by the OEM vehicle software…so there is really no “magic” in what they are doing anyway. If you look at the dyno charts from many of these supposed HP/TQ increases, they are typically around 5%-7% at peak rpm ranges…….guess what, 5% is a standard deviation even amongst mfg dynos and if you go to this link http://www.fordracingparts.com/downl...ceTechTips.pdf the engineers at Ford racing have a article on just exactly how these “tuners” play games with the hp/tq ratings, how calibration can cause misleading dyno results, & some of the “tricks” that are used to gain supposed power increases when in fact, managing your engine….. and the most important item is……these “expert tuners” (at least most) do not have or choose not to test their results during actual vehicle motion as the oems do nor are these "mail order tuners' regulated like any other auto repair shop in the US...so if they "damage" your car...gee, sorry...sue me! To get an understanding of "The Best", check out this post.....
Roush Dyno Tune Posted August 26, 2012
Bad situation-Need help! - Vintage Mustang Forums
"To make an extremely long story short. I need someone to tell me who to talk to for help. I have posted several times and got a lot of help. Got my engine build finished in May. Ran great. Took it to Roush Racing for a tune. It is a 93, efi, 302 with several upgrades. Went to get it from Roush and the water hose had blown and torn up my brand new hood I just had painted. It can be fixed. Drove the car home and it would not start the next day. Finally found the adapter between the TPS and painless harness was missing. Fixed that. It would not idle consistently. Took it back to Roush. They said it was fixed. Went less than 1/2 mile and it was idling at 2500 rpm. Took it back. They were lost. I need help. I am totally disgusted"

IMHO, if you live near any major city there are excellent tuning specialists with dynos who for the same price (if not less) will tune your vehicle taking into consideration your specific needs including environmental conditions, for your specific vehicle. IMHO, the best bang for the buck!

If you are comfortable and understand how to tune a vehicle, you can also do this yourself. There are several software programs available, that “Speak Common English” that will allow you to tune your vehicles ECM. One company is HP Tuners, they have a website….they offer two core programs, one for those who are doing dyno tuning and one for the home-garage mechanic (which is priced at about the same as most of the “canned tunes on the market) …this version limits the span of adjustments as a safeguard against doing something outside of the oem scope……basically, keeps you from doing something “too stupid by accident” (grin) and Sniper Delta Force Tuning Software. They also have adapters through affiliates for burning chips for pre-obd vehicles- but you must have an understanding of how/why you are adjusting fuel mixture and ignition timing.

Very happy with Edge CS.....intuitive, quick and simple to try different settings, an honest 2 more mpg hiway on 2 and maybe a little better on 3 if you keep your foot out of it. Better throttle response too.

Edge CTS will let you plug in a backup camera using RCA plug. Something to consider if you want to add a BU camera

I finally purchased an Edge CS.

I purchased this tuner for two reasons.

  1. overall fuel economy
  2. towing.

I just now plugged it in for the first time. After initializing I finally got to where I can program the tuner. I only see three options:

  1. Trans Only
  2. Towing
  3. Performance

From reading other posts, I was under the impression, that there would be a tune for fuel economy as well, but there isn't. Will Trans only help increase my fuel economy?

Thanks.
