So I have been trying to trace an oil leak on my 400. It appears to be coming from the oil filter area of the engine. I cleaned everything up and this seems to be the area it is coming from.
I have tried a few different filters, cleaned the mounting area really good, no old gaskets stuck around the area. It is leaking a decent amount of oil and leaves a good sized puddle where ever I park.
Not coming from the valve covers, front gasket area is dry, around the heads are dry. Oil filter has oil on it and it drips down from there onto the front diff. and then onto the ground.
Any thoughts on how to get the leak to stop or where it might be starting from?
did you check around the oil pan gasket? especially the part below the filter or dipstick tube( if a front mounted tube) You didnt say so I have to ask.
Yeah checked the oil pan and it doesn't appear to be coming from there. The top of the oil filter is getting oil on it and running down the filter. The oil pan is getting oil on it, but looks like it is coming from above the pan. If it was the pan would the oil be able to get to the top part of the filter? (by top I am talking about the area facing up towards the hood.)
Are you sure your oil filter is tight enough or too tight ? Have you put some oil on your rubber sceal?
Filter isn't to loose or to tight. Yeah I always rub oil on the rubber seal when putting a new filter on. I have even tried a few different brands of filters.
