Brother Les, do you know of a good inexpensive off the shelf scanner that will read the codes on these trucks?
I bought a 'SuperChip' programmer (I think it is a 1805model) a few years back as I wanted a chipped truck (about a hundred bucks at that time). Not a big ye-haw to write home about, but I am happy with it. It has three settings that change the RPMs and shift points.....
your question of an inexspensive off the shelf code reader for our trucks.... the 'SuperChip' tuner also has a code reader setting that comes in handy.
I would start with the simple checks of fuel issues like what was mentioned before. Not sure of the miles on your truck but the in-tank mod is a must when you start experiencing these type of issues. Then you will never question it again! Also did you ever check the oil level? even just a couple quarts low and or old oil does effect the performance of these trucks when was it last changed? Fuel Filter when was it changed? Not sure if it could be but there is also some that have experienced intermittent issues with the fuel bowl heater causing this very same issue. Go to the search and look for fuel bowl heater.
There really aren't any off the shelf inexpensive ones that will read our trucks unfortunately. I bet there is someone on this forum with AE that lives close to you that could read it.

Hi, the truck has 170K on it. It had a full service right before I bought it - oil, filters, etc a little over a month ago. I wouldn't think it's the fuel tank issue since the first time it died on me, there was almost 3/4 of a tank of fuel. I do want to do the mod though. Oil is within specs (about 1/4" from max reading) and still clean. I'll do the fuel bowl heater search. And I think I'll run up to the auto store and see what kind of code readers they have available. This isn't actually what I had planned for my vacation , but I guess better now that I have the time.
I don't think any of the code readers at the parts stores are going to do the trick. Our trucks are not OBDII compliant. They have the port, but they are on a different system.

These are the instructions for overhauling a fuel bowl (kit, about 18.00 at 'Guzzle o-rings' and two hours time) panel #7 will show you inside the fuel bowl where you can unhook the 'heater' and leave it off. you will not need it unless you live in the great white north. the easy thing to do for now is to just unplug the back of the fuel bowl #8 show what it looks like. The fuel bowl heater plug does two things. Electrical to the 'heater' and power to the 'water in bowl' sensor. You should need neither of these in the short term. I have had mine unplugged for many years.

Thanks for clarifying! Let's not worry about the scanner at the moment. Where is your location? There maybe a brother nearby with a AE !!
I'm in Carmichael, CA near Sacramento. As far as I can tell, the truck gives me about 18-20 miles before taking a dive. Then it's 15-30 minutes cooling off before it'll start again.
Just a suggestion for something easy you may want to check. Driving to camp on washboard, my engine would die, dash lights would die, dash lights would re-light, engine would self re-start, then repeated all the way to camp. Someone on the forum suggested it was a loose ground and he was spot on, it had a loose ground cable on the under-the-hood battery. Our trucks have two batteries and they need both so check both. You mentioned you were intuitively looking forwards towards flat roads, so may be worth checking. You are close by, however, unfortunately I don't have AE or any real knowledge, except about steel tank related fuel problems. Your truck should have a plastic tank so that shouldn't be the issue. (If, however, you want help doing the hutch mod, I would be happy to zip over one morning if you want help with that.)
You picked a very good place to live, there in Carmichael.
There are LOTS of FTE'rs with good code readers in that area, and in fact, they are having a get-together this Saturday in Morgan Hill. No doubt there will be a scanner or two there.

Thanks, Tim. I'll check the cables. I did clean them about a month ago, so it is a possibility. I do eventually want to do the hutch mod. Right now, I just keep it above 1/4 tank to be on the safe side. But, I may take you up on the offer after I get this thing running right.

Good to hear. Although, Morgan Hill is a ways. The way the truck is running, it would take me 10 days to get there. Hopefully, I'll be getting it fixed on Saturday (or better yet, have it fixed by then)
I just dropped the truck off at the shop for a diagnostic. It couldn't have been more perfect - died on the mechanic when he was approaching the shop from his test drive. And of course he couldn't start it to move it from the entrance. So, I grabbed a tow strap and pulled it up to the shop with the wife's truck. Told them there's a $95 tow fee. Not sure if they'll honor it. We'll see if they can pin point the problem.
