Breakaway brake battery??

My Pace 24' car hauler has a 12volt 5amp hour battery in its own small box mounted on the front of the trailer.

My question is what exactly does this battery do?

My trailer is 5 years old, so I just replaced the battery.

There seems to be a very small charger in the box as well....

Yes it does apply the brakes on the trailer when the breakaway is pulled.
Without the battery the trailer will roll on.

Yup,

My car trailer has one too. You can also test that it's working by pulling the pull cable out of the switch box and see if you can pull the trailer. The brakes should be locked.

Mine's about due for a new battery as well, it's 4 yrs old.

Thanks guys!! I kind of thought something like that.

So, it the battery wired so it will be charged by the little charger inline when the trailer is pluged into the truck?

Make sure the trailer's electrical connector is not plugged into the tow vehicle before you pull the pin out of the breakaway switch to test the trailer brakes; supposedly some brake controllers can't handle reverse voltage and end up getting fried.............
