My car trailer has one too. You can also test that it's working by pulling the pull cable out of the switch box and see if you can pull the trailer. The brakes should be locked.
Mine's about due for a new battery as well, it's 4 yrs old.
Make sure the trailer's electrical connector is not plugged into the tow vehicle before you pull the pin out of the breakaway switch to test the trailer brakes; supposedly some brake controllers can't handle reverse voltage and end up getting fried.............
