installing manual switch for GP's

Just read through the great thread titled Glow Plugs 101 by Niles. Tomorrow my husband will be installing a manual switch in his 85 F250 with a 6.9

I need to run to NAPA to pick up some things and wanted to check with you guys to find out what size wire I should get and also Niles recommended an in line fuse so what size fuse should we use?

Thanks for your help.

I assume you are talking about this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...he-e-word.html

the fourth post explains how to use the GP relay to make a manual switch. It doesn't say what gauge wire to use, but I'd assume the GP relay supply wire wouldn't use that much current.

No genscripter thats not the thread. It is dated 3-17-13 and titled Glow Plugs 101 tutorial by Chevy Eater. Sorry I don't know how to add the link to this post like you did!

There are various types of inline fuses available these days, this is a common one,

But it's also kind of old school now (uses glass fuse). You can get the same deal on an inline blade fuse or you could install a breaker instead. The main thing is to put some kind of protection on that power lead so if it ever shorts you you don't have a fire.

The inline fuses are equipped with 12 gauge wire so you can just match that, it'll be more than adequate.

I believe the holders are rated for and come with a 30 AMP fuse. I'd just run with that myself, but if anyone has a reason to go lower maybe they'll chip in with some info.

Thanks so much Niles!
I appreciate your patience with me on this subject. I have dial up and it was taking me forever to get through all the threads addressing GP's.

On my way now to pick up the items needed.

Okay, got the push button in yesterday. Used 14 gauge wire and the only fuse we had here at the house was a 15 amp so we tried it. It started but it blew the fuse. Got a 30 amp from my son when he got home and this morning put it in and the truck started right up. We didn't let it run long, just wanted to make sure it would start. About 3 hours later we go out to start the truck to go somewhere and the thing won't start. We don't hear the clicking anymore either (at the relay). Tested the relay like we did yesterday and now the relay doesn't seem to be working. Going to the auto parts to pick one up but I am wondering if somehow WE messed up the relay. What do you think? The 30 amp fuse is fine. The GP's were tested yesterday and we do have 2 that need to be replaced. We checked the Gp's again today and they are all fine except for those same 2. Any thoughts on this? BTW the GP's are motorcraft that were purchased at the Ford dealership.

My husband needs this truck for work tomorrow and would like to get it going. I am reading through the threads on GP's and hard starts etc. but I have dial up and it takes sooooo long for the pages to load. So please forgive me if this is redundent for you experts out there.

To recap, we used Chevy Eaters tutorial to test the Gp's, GP relay and the controller yesterday. 2 GP's were bad, the relay tested fine and the controller failed the test! So, we decided to put the manual push button in to warm the Gp's. Used 14 g. wire and 30 amp fuse. Now relay doesn't seem to be working. Would like to know if we possibly messed up the relay somehow???? My husband is on his way to get the new relay. I'll keep you updated, sure would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions....maybe we're missing something that is obvious to you.....?

TIA

Well he put the new relay in and it started right up. But I am still wondering if we burnt up that original relay somehow. I don't want to ruin the new one. Anybody?????

As long as it's wired in correctly then you didn't burn it up. It just failed, it's old and electrical so it happens.
