i have a 1974 ford f100 with a 302. the engine and fmx transmission are out of a 72 mustang if that helps with diagnosis
today i developed a noise that sounds like a small dog barking extremely fast.
i have removed the 2 belts from the power steering and alt/water pump but i still had the noise. from what i can tell the squeal seems to be coming from the harmonic balancer but at 90.00 (cost of a balancer) i wanted a 2nd opinion.
I was hoping to hear a small dog barking real fast but I didn't.
I'm no expert but your balancer seems to be out of balance. Have you tried putting your hands around it and moving it? These things have some kind of rubber inside of them and they will eventually deteriorate and fall apart. If its the original, then it could be time to replace the 41 year old with something fresh.

Just my 2 cents.
I agree with kikkup.... it's easy enough to take off the rest of the belts and use your hands to feel for play..... I would also check the water pump. It's more common to have the chirping or barking sound come from it. Same thing, feel it by hand, trying to jiggle side to side, and top to bottom.... sooner the better because if it's the pump, the clutch will go bad also and may shoot fan into your radiator.... if it's the balancer, the extra shimmy will hurt your crank, maybe even break the main bolt into crankshaft -big deal when that happens.
Watching that balancer shimmy would bother me more that the sounds , I'v had them do a lot worse. Belts get worn on the sides from not running true and will try to climb out of the pulley making a squeek just for a split second as it relines itself only to repeat it again making noise . Most of that can be fixed by replacing the pulleys and or belts or just making sure they are in alignment. Bad water pump and power steering pump can make a racket too.

the harmonic balancer doesnt have any play, seems tight other than a small piece of rubber seal spitting out of it.

the first thing i did before i came here was i removed both belts and started it but the squeal was still there, i was hoping it was the water pump or alternator as i have plenty of those lying around.

i was thinking it looked kind of funny, i have had my fair share of things going bad with vechicles but i truthfully never had a harmonic balancer go bad until now.
