Ghost key?

Well, reminded myself why it is a good idea to have 2 keys for your vehicle. And, not to leave the key in the on position. ARG!

"Most" OTR truckers carry a spare key so they can leave the truck running at rest stops, ect for obvious reasons.
I do the same thing....I have a "mini" key ring with a few keys for various stuff on my truck on it.....very handy!
Plus I've got an ignition/door key hidden on my truck too!

Yep, I just cut a couple keys last month for Tex. on another note, if you leave the truck running and want to lock the doors, you have to use the remote entry. Atleast on my both I've had ('02 and '03). If its running and you lock it with the door button, it unlocks automatically. You can lock it with the remote and it stays locked.

WIsh I could of done that. On my E99, if the engine was running, the remotes wouldn't work. So I just put in a remote starter.

I need to clarify just a bit. If the door is open and the engine running, it will always unlock itself, regardless of how it's locked (not sure if you push it down manually, but if you hit the lock button with the door open, it unlocks again). If the door is closed with the engine running, it will stay locked. (Im assuming it assumes youre inside). There's only 2 ways to do that that I know of, and that's with the window down (pointless lol) or with a spare key or clicker. I just carry a spare clicker in my pocket at all times, kinda like my knife. I feel it missing if its not there.

Yeah I'm not sure about all years, but I've done this on my 2002 and 2003. It may be the difference in the programming between the GEM and the VSS? I think they changed to the VSS in 2002 IIRC.

The keyless entry on my 02 won't work with the engine running. You can push the lock down it and shut the door and it will stay locked but if you use the power locks it will unlock. Never tried it on the 2000, I need to fix the power locks.

My remote starter allows me to do the following:

Pull up to the local Dunkin Donuts. Click the remote button (once in my case), I can then hear the relay latch, activating the remote (parking lights turn on also). Then turn the ignition off, and remove the key - the truck stays running (for as long as your remote is programmed). Go inside, order my coffee (milk only, no sugar usually). Return to my truck, unlock via remote, get in, insert the key, turn the ignition to the run position, and off I go.

I use that feature a lot.

I have a belt clip retractable key ring that I have a spare truck key on so during the summers, unless I am going into a store for longer then 5 minutes my work truck gets started in the morning and shut off when I get home at night. I call it my remote start. I could not believe how many key events my old truck had from me starting it 20-30 times a day. A stick shift with a bad parking brake makes you shut it off every time you get out, I love having an automatic now for a work truck, other then the dead leg from holding the brake forever in rush hour traffic that is..

I was sure to get a second key cut and programmed for my Excursion shortly after getting my AE scan tool, since my wife is good about losing her keys.
