351W head swap

I have a 1996' 351W OBD cali model truck. I picked up a set of Edlebrock heads. All I know is that they are aluminum, double spring, 2.02 intake and 1.64 exhaust (or vice versa don't remember). Will they fit on my motor without having to change the pistons? Only reason I am doing this is because I have a few "bolt errors" with my exhaust manifolds and the new heads will correct that.

Also how effective/ineffective is it for me to bypass my EGR/EVR? I cut the tube when I put the headers on (out of excitement and inexperience) now I have the sensor on there and the thread part welded into my header just have to custom make a tube. Should I make the tube or is it fine without it?

That question can be complicated. I believe the stock pistons have a 19.5 cc dish but haven't been able to confirm this. You will need to know the combustion chamber size in the new heads to know this. I say that because any heads you replace the stock ones with will most likely have smaller combustion chambers and thus run your compression up. Now thats fine if you go into this knowing you may have to run higher octane gas to prevent poor performance. Get the details on the heads, primarily the combustion chamber size and post back.

Is there anywhere I can find a name or ID on the heads?

All I can see is Edelbrock performer RPM heads... and the only numbers casted into them are by the springs so I have no idea how to identify them. I'll be calling the tech line tomorrow but that's about all I know for now.

These heads use stud mount rockers so they're not a direct swap, you need studs and guideplates which may come with the heads but also you need rockers and hardened pushrods which likely did not come with them.

Edelbrock also says that the pistons have to be notched for valve clearance with 2.02 valves..

So even with all the parts they still wouldn't be a direct swap because of my pistons.

With the stock cam, you may have nothing to worry about.. And I doubt you would. Personally, I'd save the heads for something better.

Well the only reason I'm considering it is because a few of my exhaust manifold bolts are like 1/2 thick bolts with with 3/4" head on them. Cuz if I don't use them now then I'm just sellin them because I'm going in another direction with the engine swap later this year.

Should i put them on and dry run the motor to see it the valves hit? Although like Paul said, ill need new rockers.

It's unlikely you will have P-V clearance problems with the stock cam but it's not something I'd take a chance on, it's not that hard to make a solid lifter and do a clay test, then you know if there are any problems or not.

All that said if you're just trying to get the motor going again used E7TE heads are often pretty cheap to pickup on the local classifieds.

I was only thinking it because I HAVE the heads to my disposal and I already spent a grand on them for IF/WHEN I do the engine rebuild so I figured I might as well use them if not then they are just going back to the classifieds.

The new Edelbrocks I'm buying come with the valves, springs, studs, and guide plates. However if they are used these parts may not be there or that style may not have came with them. And yes no matter what heads you get you will need rockers.

They have everything but rockers. But I'm still a little nervous about putting them on the truck.
