Trans troubles

Hi, i recently purchased a 99 f150 4x4 5.4l has 350,000 km.... I removed trans pan and replaced filter and fluid....fluid was pretty dirty, i cut filter open it had some small peices assumably clutch material, a couple tiny metal shaving piles. Bot pan was ok. With just some crap on magnet. Ive been having a rough shift when i kick down to passing gear sometimes. But other than that its ok. The other day my od light started flashing?? I assum i will be needing a new trans soon??
Anyway will a transmission from a 99 f150 with a 4.6 l motor fit if i use my torque converter?? Or do i need to do more than that?
Or should i just drive it till it blows up? Was kinda thinking of dropping pan and checking filter again and changing torque converter fluid also. So will have all new fluid. Not mr lube crap fluid.
Thanks in advance

Transmissions: the 4.6 and 5.4 have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. That means that all the transmissions will bolt up. All the 5.4 engines have 8 bolt crankshafts. Some 4.6 engines (ROMEO ENGINE) have 6 bolt cranks. You will need the flex plate from the 5.4.

Thanks for your reply stewArt.... I kinda figured as much. From what i read the 4.6 trans is a bit lighter duty. But should be fine for my needs....
My od light is flashing on every drive now. But everything is shifting and working normal. I need to find out why and will go from there

You need to have the codes read.

Ok stu, just letting know i had the codes read today. It had a po781 code. 1-2 shift solenoid or something pertaining to it. And mass air code. I ordered a new solenoid today. Will be in tomorrow. I will drop pan and change solenoid, i hope its straight forward,i will also put new filter on and look inside the old one which is 3-4 weeks old.
Im not sure whether to drain torque converter at same time or just refill pan like last time..... I hope this will help
If you have any pointers i would apreciate them... I hope no check ***** fall out but dont think so, from what i can read.
Also i was hoping the mr lube fluid will be good enough or should i use mercon v
Thanks Dale

WAIT

Because a code pointed to a widget does not mean the widget is bad.

It means there is a problem in that particular system.

Bad wire, poor connection, corrosion, mud etc.

Update

Well today i replaced the 1-2 shift solenoids, and the 1-2 acumalator piston, springs looked ok. Also drained torque converter and replaced my filter again.... Put 12 litres of motorcraft mercon v fluid in.
During my drive home the od light started flashing again. I got home unhooked battery for ten min or so and went for drive. No od light this time, but i suspect it will return next drive. Not sure what my next step is. All the wiring and conections seemed fine. This time i had nothing inside filter or on magnet. Was clean as a whistle.
Im stumped dont know what to try next any sugestions would be great

A P0781 does not mean there is anything wrong with the shift solenoid. That code is not set by a bad solenoid, so I'm not surprised that you didn't fix this by changing the solenoid.

That code means the engine speed didn't drop when the PCM commanded a 1-2 shift. Often that is caused by a damaged intermediate clutch or a stuck shift valve. I see you worked on the accumulator piston. I think you need to remove the valve body and see if the 1-2 shift valve is stuck or has a broken spring. If they are fine then I suspect the intermediate clutch is gone.

Well thanks for the reply.... I was kind of thinking i was wasting my time, i pulled my filter apart it was clean after 3 weeks of driving... But did has some small pieces in the previous filter i pulled apart when i bought the truck. But no metal pieces to speak of..... Im a bit leary of removing the valve body myself but will if i have too..... ( im scared about the check *****)
Im leaning toward bad clutch like u said.
The prob is very intermitent. I drove all night tonight without the od light flasing, i had reset batery today, i suspect will only get worse
Thanks for your time. Will keep you guys posted

Mark, if the shift valve was stuck or broken spring wouldent it always be a shift problem?? Or is it posible there is debris in there or something?

A sticky valve can be intermittent. A broken spring is always broken.
