Red face Help! flush or drop pan??

I have I 1997 expy with a 99 4.6l engine and trans. 96k A/T

I bought the truck about 4 months ago and am debating what to do because I don't know the trans. history. The fluid is reddish brown in color, does not smell burnt, seems to have a good consistency and has no metal flakes in it. The truck shift smoothly and without hesitation into drive and excellent while driving (can barely tell when it shifts). It does seem to shift a little harder into reverse but still has no hesitation. Is this normal???

I am leaning toward dropping the pan and changing out the filter....

Any advice or input would be great thanks!!

I think you'd be much better off changing all of the trans fluid. Change what's in the pan AND what's in the torque converter. Your trans should have a drain plug in the torque converter. You can change the filter if you like, but I don't think that's important. Here is an excellent article that shows how to change all of the fluid yourself. ;-)
