cruise control not working

cruise control not working
2003 X limited 2wd 6.0L
Good morning everyone.
About a year ago had trouble with right front end where tie rod came off and bar swung around knocking other things underneath. As a result, my cruise control stopped working. I installed new wheel speed sensor with wiring on that wheel and didn't see it come back on. But then when I took it to my mechanic he said he bypassed something to get the cruise control to work. It did work for about 4 months then stopped.
About two months ago I was surprised when I activated it on the highway and it worked! I couldn't believe it.... but only that one time.... it won't reactivate. Any suggestions on what it could be? I was thinking of replacing the switch (about $55). Could it be a relay? which one, where located? Thanks for any advice of suggestions you can offer.
