cruise control trouble

I've got a 2000 f-250 7.3 the cruise control only works half the time. Anybody have any sollutions? Thanks.

This is a guess, speed sensor in rear axle? Someone will chime in.

Not sure if it includes diesels like yours, but there is a recent major recall on many Ford cruise controls for a fire hazard.
I have had problems with the cruise on/off switch not responding in an older Ford. The contacts behind the steering wheel switches needed cleaning then it worked again.
