backup sensor

These trucks sure are not economical to maintain and with the warranty off I can see bills for C notes piling up. I keep my truck clean and well maintained but yikes, I hope I don't start to get big bills now that I am over the 100 000 kms (60 000 miles) period. Now I can see why dealerships make most of their profits in parts and service repair. Wish I was a mechanic. The mechanic told me with the pads and calipers on these trucks it is about 8-900 dollars. Didn't ask if that included labour but I believe it does?

Anyone else having backup sensor failures? They are a great option and can save backing up and banging something. Love the backup camera too with these behemoths.
My truck only has 4,200 miles so no problems yet, thank god.
They snap in and out of the bumper. It's a 5 minute repair if you know which sensor is bad.
On my 2000 truck, I was replacing brake pads and turning rotors every 35,000 miles. With the towing that I do, I had a lot of brake chatter. I've been very well pleased that my current truck is at 80,000 miles and the brakes are still OEM and working just fine. Yes, they are wearing and I'll end up changing them out before I hit 100,000 miles. And even then, it looks like just new pads and turn the rotors. I've been pleased with the improvements in the brakes since my 2000 Superduty.

As far as brakes go, that's something my old man taught me (one of many things!)when I was a teenager to fix myself. I just took my wife's Saturn to the dealer to get it inspected, they wanted $900 to do rotors and pads on all 4 corners. I said, throw the wheels back on, I'll be down to pick it up. Went to Advance, picked up all the parts for $300 and was back at the shop to get reinspected a couple hours later. They didn't even pull the tires, saw the new rotors still shining and passed it...
Most dealers are a ripoff, plain and simple.

So I've read a lot about the rear parking system not working. I've been trying to locate my issue without going to the dealer. Here are some tips that may help the do it yourselfer.
1. Rear Park button light "OFF" always on. - Seems to indicate system working and fuses good. Time to check problem in the rear.
2. Key on, Engine off, Park brake on, Put in reverse. ( don't park on hill )
3. Listen to each sensor. All should have same fast clicking/ticking noise.
4. If one seems different, Try swapping sensors around. This tests harness and sensors. If swapped sensor starts working, sensor that doesn't work is bad, If non-working sensor works in different location, Problem in harness or with the computer.
5. All sensors click the same and appear to be working? Time to look at the speaker.
6. Remove right upper panel next to right rear glass. Remove speaker connector. Take a 194 bulb ( same as a marker bulb ) using you finger nail, pull down and out the small terminals of the bulb. They should make small pins to stick into the speaker harness connector. With bulbinstalled in place of the speaker. Turn on, put in reverse. "off" light should be off. Go check rear sensors by walking slowly into range. As you get closer the light will be very dim and should get slightly brighter when you block a sensor. Apparently the 194 bulb has the same resistance as the speaker. Now you know everything works. Speaker is bad.
7. Ok... Speaker hard to find and expensive? I took my old Nextel phone, Removed the large speaker and tossed the rest. Removed the ford speaker and desoldered the connector pins. Resoldered them to the Nextel speaker and installed it into the speaker housing. Key on, Reverse.... BEEEP. Now "back" in buisness.
8. I've read on other forums that any small speaker will work. Cheap ones for mp3 players are easy to find. I also read that the recording greeting cards may also work. I just happened to have an old phone.
Good luck, I hope this helps people fix the park assist.
Not my words, but this is something I found here on the forum - thank you to whomever came up with this!
So far my problem seems to be the wiring, as best I can tell. Something I will not pursue to correct unless I can locate here on the forum or on ebay or equivalent.
For what it's worth, I hope the diagnosis process helps some of you!
