I have a 04 with 27k miles the front brakes started squealing around 12k miles, when I was at the dealer (approx. 15k miles) I had them take a look, they said the rotors didn't have enough runout to turn so they deglazed the pads and the squeal went away for a few days. Two weeks ago I had the truck at another dealer (where i bought it) for warranty work and to check the brakes, they said the rotors were glazed over bad and they put on a new set under warranty and deglazed the pads again. (they wouldn't do new pads under warranty with over 12k miles) This worked for about a day then the squeal was back and worse than ever. This past weekend I pulled the pads and applied quiet brakes, this worked for approx. 10 miles before they went to squealing again.
I said all this to ask if anyone has had this trouble and what they did to fix the problem.
Has anyone tried ceramic pads I think this will be my next step.
thanks for any help !!
are they squeeling all the time or just under hard breaking?...i thought glazing only happened from hard breaking or hot breaks like riding them on a big hill or somthing.
they squeal the majority of the time under normal braking, I can vary pressure from light to hard and sometimes find a "quiet" spot
after taking it in for service the first time the service advisor said to try hitting the brakes hard at about 60mph and this would break the glaze, but I think it did the opposite by glazing over completly. I haven't hit them hard with the new rotors because I am afraid of glazing them.
right there with you matthew,
my screw is getting ready to turn 12k and the brakes started squeaking a few months ago. now they squeak under normal driving everytime i touch the pedal. '
have you found any solution?
I had the same problem with about 16K. I went to the dealer several times and they kept telling me they didn't hear the squeal. It was only at slow speeds, or near stopping. Finally they called the FCSD rep out and he agreed to replace everything in the front brakes. It took some time but I got them to fix the issue. I know have Almost 19K miles.
I would go with ceramic pads. A trick to getting the glaze off the rotors is too take the tip of a flat tip screw driver and scratch the rotor lightly about 4 places around it on both sides. Then when you get the brakes hot the scratche's will knock off the glaze durring hard braking. just a tip. I do it on cars all the time when I have this problem. It almost always works. good luck
Mine were really bad with no quiet spot. Turns out it was the emergency brake sticking. They fixed it, and it was quiet for 2 days. Now I have the same problem as you. I can find a quiet spot if I try. My problem is with my dealer. When I took my truck in last time they said the metallic brake linings will always squeak, and they will charge me a diagnostic fee if they did not find anything. Is this normal under warranty?
I never have heard of them charging a diagnostic fee for warranty. I think they are just trying to make some money. I know I had a problem with the A/C making a funny noise on a truck once and I took it to the dealer like 5 or 6 times before they finnaly heard the problem and got it fixed. They never once said they would charge me. They just said they didnt hear anything
I had mine at the dealer recently for them to change out the ring/pinion gears in the rear end to hopefully solve the rear end whining noise. Parts are still on order so that is another story.
I complained to the dealer that my brakes started squealing at about 16k (I now have about 24K). Primarily the front left. Service advisor told me that there is a TSB out and they were ordering me new rotors for the front. Will have those installed when I bring it back for the rear end fix.
I plan on immediatly installing the ceramic pads with the new rotors.
I have a similiar brake issue, and was just told there is a revised bulletin for new rotors/pads. I believe this would be the 2nd or 3rd revision on the rotor. Be aware that the bulletins advise the service techs to not attempt to turn the rotors down in an attempt to correct the issues. At leats this is what I'm being told by my service tech.
Oh, one last commnet. I do agree that tne ceramic pads may help quite abit, but am I the only one who feels I shouldn't have to pay for replacement pads on a new truck?
i agree with you 100% on that you shouldn't have to pay for the pads,
this is the first truck i have ever had brake problems with, the only issue
i've had before is the dust.
let me what you find out about the new tsb
