i have a 1967 f100 2wd that the previous owner swaped in a 1978? 351W. when idleing the engine makes a slight ticking sound on both driver and passenger sides, however once i apply some throttle the ticking goes away. has anyone experienced this before? or know what it could be?
hook up a mechanical oil gauge so you can monitor the oil pressure. its probably a stuck lifter, or your oil pump is going out and isnt getting enough oil up there while idling. how many miles are on the motor?
might also try an oil change if it hasnt been done already. have you checked the oil level, might also be low
The reason I asked is I have had trouble with flow on fram filters... I now only use motorcraft parts. For some reason I had a tick with the fram. Changed filter and tick went away.... Strange I know, but it worked.
I've had the same problem on my car...which has a variable oil pump...
it doesnt push much oil at idle...
pushes plenty at speed though.
I'm going with the other guys...you're not getting oil somewhere at idle. If an engine sits for a while between startups you might have a problem with lube draining down into the pan...
I replaced the filter with a motorcraft one and changed the oil to Castrol SAE-30. The ticking didn't go away but it did get quieter and the engine is idling a little smoother.
