V10 ticking or knocking

My V10 has 150,000 miles, and has picked up a tick or knock coming from the left side of the engine. The ticking sounds like a lifter. The ticking comes and goes, and is most prevelant when it is cold. When I start the truck, it will tick, then may go away while idling as it warms up. It will then come back when I start to drive and after a few miles it may or may not go away. Has anyone experienced this? Any help would be appreciated.

What's your oil pressure doing? It shouldn't vary.

My oil pressure is staying about 3/4 of the way up the gauge, and does not vary.

You may want to use a 'scope and touch it to each COP. If there is a loud one or ones you may have a loose spark plug or two. I had a loose one on my 99 @135k after getting the plugs done at 100k. It made a ticking noise, but it did not come and go so muchl.

Yeah! Check for loose plugs ASAP.

Otherwise, this can be piston slap. I have it in my '97 Cougar 4.6L, and it comes and goes just like yours does. Odd that it didn't show up 'til 150K miles, though.

I'd make sure the ticking is not a spark plug first, then come back and see if we can narrow it down.

I put new plugs in last week thinking that it might be a loose plug. Unfortunately, it did not fix it. I even went back through the plugs to be sure I had them all tight.

I thought about that also, but checked it out, and can not find one. A buddy of mine has talked to a buddy of his that is a mechanic at a local Ford dealer, and he said it sounds like a lifter to him. He said that this is common on the V10. I have searched this website, and do not see anyone commenting about a lifter issue, so I don't know if he knows what he is talking about or not.

Still has lifters, just a different set up than the standard cam and lifter set up.

There are "lifters", but they are called "hydraulic lash adjusters" because they don't move, they are the pivot for the rocker "arm" (or follower).

I think that statement about lifters going on V10's is complete BS. We haven't heard anything about that here, but then again, most guys here take VERY good care of their engines. If there were problems with the lifters, there would be problems with both the 4.6L and the 5.4L, and believe me, there are NOT very many complaints (if ANY!) about that for the V8's.

If the oil isn't changed regularly, you'll get particles in the oil, and they can (and most likely WILL) get into the "lifters" and cause problems. But that's on ANY engine, not just V10's.

Get the plugs checked ASAP.

I bought this truck used with 120k on it so I don't know oil change history before I got it. I do know that I religiously change the oil between 3000 and 3500 with Exxon Superflow 10W40.
After searching this sight for complaints about the lifters, and not finding anything, I figured this was BS.
I have been thinking of going to Mobile 1 synthetic. I saw that some of the people posting seem to swear by it.

Thanks
Mark

I had the SAME problem!!! I had several mechanics try to figure it out, and even pulled a valve cover on a VAN to check for cam wear! It drove us nuts for about 2 months. Finally I bought another motor to replace it because of the mileage. Then, we thought about doing a TOTAL CHEMICAL TUNEUP. Chemicals in the tank, Fuel Rail,AND OIL! The next day, it was GONE! That was at 100k, Now at 169K.

One thing to consider is the OIL!!!!!! The (intermediate) seller changed it to Kendall 10-40, and I did two more changes before the ticking happened......I changed to 4 quarts 5-30 Mobil 1. 3 quarts regular 5-20 or 5-30. NO MORE PROBLEMS. These motors seem to be DESIGNED for thinner oil!!!!!!!!!!

Before you do anything mechanical $$$$$$$$ do the above!!!!! CHEAP!

Can you tell me exactly what you did on your "total chemical tuneup"? I would like to know what brand of chemical you put where and how long you left it there.
I would like to try the same thing.
Thanks
Mark

Chemical tuneup

It has been about 5 years so I don't remember the brand. The "box" contained three cans of cleaner. One for the gas tank and one for the oil. The second can needed an attatching hose to put it directly into the fuel rail. The kit was sold to professional mechanics, typically at a service station or auto repair. I don't think Auto dealers would have/use them?????? I have also not seen them at a Kragans, Pep Boys, etc. Try a local GOOD auto parts store. They may have customers (above) that they sell kits to or know who distributed to them. $20 seemed like the price point. If you strike out let me know, I can track down our local distributor, etc. Sorry........... OH, I did have a nother kit that I put on the shelf.....One of the cans ate itself in a couple years...Good STuff! I would guess to work on the oil first if you have a choice. As mentioned by others also, these motors don't like thick oil or dirt! 20-30 miles and change the oil.
