Heater core kaput

Evening all,

The wife's feet got wet today and she's really upset! So I guess I better fix this.

I really have no need for a heater so I wouldn't mind shutting it off altogether. I've read a few threads, on here, concerning this already.

I have a shiny new ball valve ready to fit... but to which hose. Is the intake top or bottom?

Thanks!

If you only close off one line what will keep it from back flowing into the heater?

So I should just bypass it altogether?

Rigger, If you don't have any use for heat or defrost, take the shiny ball valve back, get a piece of 1/2" copper pipe and plug both ends of the heater hose into it and clamp them. Bypass it all together.

The cores are pretty inexpensive, replacing it is a piece o cake, you would have it if ever needed.

Replacing the heater core is a simple task if you are young and skinny. It helps to remove the glove box for easy access to the controls.

If you are fat or old you will do yourself a huge favor by removing the seat first (4 bolts). I have to remove the seat.

Heater hose is 5/8" and 1961/64's use a different heater core than 1965/66.

I don't use mine either but it is nice to have if you need it in the cooler season, actually I would like to put in a valve to shut mine off so it doesn't blow hot in the summer.

I believe maybe putting in a valve to shut it off and then tee the 2 lines together before the shut off, would shut it off and bypass it and make it usable if needed by flipping the valve.

I ended up just removing the hoses from the core and coupling them. I will see if I can replace it or get it repaired in the future.

Deluxe fresh air heaters (have two cables mounted to a bracket under the dash) came w/a heater water valve (C3UZ-18495-A) that is spliced into the inlet to heater core heater hose.

Economy fresh heaters do not have the two cables, have a manually operated shut-off valve (C5TZ-18495-A) instead.

Mr. Wilson, I'm sorry you don't like my response, but a 2" +/- long piece of copper water pipe inserted in both pieces of 5/8" heater hose and clamped will hold. Trust me, I have seen it work, OK???
