So I've been wanting to get my windows tinted for a long time and I'm getting ready to pull the trigger. I want 20% all the way around, question is does anyone know what the stock rear window tinted glass percentage is?? It looks to me like its 35%, but a buddy of mine swears up and down that its 20% and if I just do the front two at 20% they will blend perfect.
Just like to hear if anyone has done this and how it looked, or if anyone knows what the stock tinted glass is?
20% is pretty dark. I dont know what the rears are, but I will tell you to make sure you check your local laws before doing this. Here in Texas the fronts cant be any darker than 32%, and the rest can be as dark as you want them.
What Pin said, check state law before doing unless you like getting stopped for what you feel will be no reason.
In the law and the window business the percent of tint is the amount of light transmitted through the glass, so 20% is darker than 32% because it only allows 20% of the light through the glass.
It is illegal here to less than 35% maybe 32% not exactly sure but I know 20% is illegal on the driver windows. That said though I've had 20% before and know a lot of people that do and most of the time around here you will never get stopped unless you have limo tint even then the cops don't seem to care much around here.
I will not be doing the tint myself but my buddy does a lot of it and is pretty good at it but all he has is 20% and limo. Obviously I don't want limo but I do want 20% all the way around. My problem will be if he does the fronts at 20% and they don't match the back ill have to either buy the shade of tint that will make the rears match or go to a shop to have it done. That's why I was curious if anyone knew what the stock tint is on our trucks.
This is from my point of view, yours may differ. My truck had 20% on the front when I bought it, also older tint so it was turning blue. 20% at night time makes it really hard to see turning a corner, to the point have to roll down the window to see where your going. I scraped it all including the factory rears, did limo in the back window and extended cab doors, then 32% on the fronts. Thinking 32% would be to light for my taste I was very happy with the outcome. With limo in the rear, and legal on the sides, the front still appears darker than 32%.
Plus side, im legal, wont get pulled over, and wont get a ticket saying I have to waste money all over again to redo it.
It only takes once for them catching you, then they will be all over you for everything everytime they see you.

Thanks for the input man. The problem I have mostly is with having two different shades of tint. I have slight OCD and it drives me absolutely crazy looking at it, as it does right now with having the rears tinted and the fronts not. I know 20% is pretty dark but I've had it before and did not mind it, but I know I do not want limo tint on any of the windows, I was driving my buddys truck the last two weeks when mine was down and he has limo all the way around, its cool in the day but sucks *** at night!! I just want it even all the way around and dark enough that you cant really see in when passing by.
I notice on mine which has factory tint on the rear extended cab doors and rear window is factory. I have some tinting experience. The front door windows are tinted after market. I think that the rear factory tint is 35% or 32%. Because you can see through the rear cab windows easier than the front door windows. From looking through the rear windows at the height of the truck to the front windshield you can make out everything. It is due to the amount off light come threw the the front windshield. I dont care for someone being able to see or make out everything threw the rear windows. In my experience I would just tint all the windows the same. 20% all around. Due to the large front window letting in so much light. Also have him put the front windshield band on to. You will love it! It helps when the Sun is right at the top of the glass cutting the glare with out having to put down your Sun Visor.
I have noticed in my area there is a lot of people tinting the whole front windshield. I would say maybe only 50%.
In my opinion, 20% matches as closely as possible. I had 35% on the front of my last truck and it was noticeably different. I ended up having it changed to 20.
I put max legal (no clue what percent, I let a shop do it) all the way around. So the back glass and rear doors were darker because it was added to factory. I didn't do the windshield cause I don't like only the strip. Next time I need a windshield I'll get one with the superduty logo up top that blocks the light up top.
Thanks for all the replies guys and the pics are great as well!!
Seems like the 20% and stock do match up fairly good so I think Im going to try that to start with my buddy and if it doesn't match up to my liking I will just take it to the local tint guy and have him match up the rear windows. I don't think ill be doing the front window bar at this time though. I've never really liked them, I've still got the stock super duty windshield, and I live in the PNW so sun is only a problem about two months a year!!! ......I'll be getting the window visors as well so I can have my windows cracked when its raining.
I've got 5% all the way around my truck. I've been stopped for it. I was doing 87 mph in a 70 and the cop stopped me for my tint.... Not for speeding not for my truck sitting WAY too high but for the freakin tint.... I know here in Michigan it's illegal to have the front windows tinted peroid except for a stupid 4" strip across the top. I was 3 hours from home headed to a mud bog and he let me off. It was funny... The guy was short too. When he came to the passengers side window I had to flip my center counsel up and scoot to the center just so I could see him hahaha. There's some pictures of my truck in my garage if you care to look
