Dana 60 width

I've searched and searched on this and couldn't find any solid info. I have a Dana 60 from a 1970 F250 that I want to put into my 49 F2. Everything I've found says this should work. The stock rearend in the 49 is 61 inches wms-wms. This Dana 60 seems to be about 64 inches. Is the extra width a known fact but acceptable? Are there 1970 Dana 60's from F250's that are narrower? Will the extra 1.5 inches per side cause a problem or be ok? Thanks for any insight!

Any pre 1972 Dana 60 out of an F250 will fit without any issues. It's a common swap.

Were there different brake widths that would make a difference? It is a fact that the Dana 60 is almost 3 inches wider than stock. Maybe it won't be an issue and I need to stop worrying...

1953/65 F250's have 12 1/8" x 2" front/rear drum brakes as do some 1966/72 F250's.

12" x 2 1/2" front/rear drum brakes introduced in 1966 for F250's, standard equipment on Camper Specials and with 7,500 & 8,100 GVWR's (all 2WD).

Dual piston caliper disc brakes optional for 1968/72 F250 2WD's, rear brakes are 12" x 2 1/2"

btw: It's any pre 1973 F250, 1972 and before is the same (inner rear frame rail width behind the cab is 33 1/2").

1973 F100/350: The width between the inner rear frame rails behind the cab is 37 1/2" except the following:

1973/77 F250 4WD (High Boys) / 1973/79 F350 Cab & Chassis / 1973/79 F350 Regular Cabs on the 140" wheelbase.

Thanks for the information NumberDummy. I will assume then that the slight width difference will not be problematic. Are the rearends with 2" brakes more desirable for this swap though? Thanks.

No such thing. The brake drums/shoes are different, the rear axle itself is the same.

Sorry if I'm being difficult here...So the drums for the 2" are not narrower than the drums for the 2.5"? Do the 2" drums provide a narrower wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface than the 2.5" drums?

The rear end itself is the same whether the rear brakes are 12 1/8" x 2" or 12" x 2 1/2."

F100/350 rear axles have nothing to do with what the brakes sizes are...and this includes trucks with dual rear wheels (DRW).

Some people think there are specific rear axles with SRW, DRW, different sized rear brakes. There ain't!

The different size brakes are made up only in drum width. Overall width of the axle is not affected.

I did this swap on an F-2 years ago, but don't remember the exact year of the D60 rear i used. 63-64 i think. I don't remember it being wider though.....
Will an extra 1.5 inches on each side make your tires rub?

64" is right at what the later (> '73) axles were; are you sure the axle you're looking at was original to the '70?
