For static timing - if the distributor rotates counter-clockwise, which way do I turn it to advance the timing?

(V-8 engine)

For you clockwise .. A good place to start is with the vaccum advance pointed to 5 o'clock .. Did you have the dizzy out?

My distributor is an aftermarket Crane, so the vacuum was more like 7:00 on this one.
