retarded i know.........

so im trying to get my coolant temp gauge working(aftermarket) and i found a sensor of sorts right in from of the head on the drivers side in the block and it looks like it at one time had wires going to it but they are no longer there and an other that is right next to cylinder 1 on the drivers side by the exhaust. now i bought a temp sensor only its actually called a "switch" and it looks nothing like the other two?????? so what the hell? can anyone tell me what those are and what i bought? haha sorry for the stupid questions.......

The "switch" sensor should have to male square prongs, and goes behind the thermostat housing kinda. Its what tells the GPs how long to glow and when the HPCA to be on or not.

The one in the pic looks to be the one for the guage.

I believe the one on the head is for the light, the one above/behind the water pump is the gauge.
My reason for believing so is that the wire to the head sensor shown above is always falling off, but my gauge keeps working fine.

Show us a pic of what you got and see if we can positively identify it.

Here's the other one:

HBN, which sensor are you referring too? I'm drawing a blank on one being by the T-Stat housing. Maybe it's obvious, had a bad day today.

Cool, thanks for clearing that up John. I don't think I've ever even noticed that third one above the T-Stat before. Even did the T-stat on the '85 and it still eluded me.

If you're trying to get an aftermarket gauge working, none of the stock senders are going to help you.

You'll have to figure out the brand on the gauge and get a replacement sender thats compatible with that brand (and style..) of gauge. Generally, senders are made with a certain range of resistance for a range of temperatures. Its possible that a certain sender might work with several different gauges, but you'd have to do the research on that.

If you have an automatic 1 is for the transmisson TET and it won't let the trans go into L UP/OD if its disconnected.

I have a banks nongated turbo and not banks gauges. Both have been on there for A LONG time. Going to move to az and need this sucker reliable and I need to be able to monitor shiz.
