I've owned my 92 F250 7.3 for a little over 20 years. I really like thesetup and its worked well for me for over 175K miles. About 15 years ago Istarted to get a CEL on the shifter ****. This would happen maybe once maybetwice a year. It would shift kinda crappy, like the torque converter wasn’tunlocking, but then after a couple of days the light would go out and all wouldbe good for at least 6 months and sometimes well over a year.
Then last year I noticed what seemed to clear up the CEL light was making aleft hand turn at about 15 MPH with my foot of the throttle. Sure enough whenthe light came on this year, last week, I tried the left hand turn trick and low and behold the light went out and the tranny became normal again.
So why is this trick working? Years ago, before I became aware of thistrick, tranny shops and dealerships couldn’t say for sure what the problem was. They would suggest torque converter replacement or the sending units, which I have replaced. The trans has never been worked on except for my one time trannyflush and numerous fluid changes in between.
What code is stored in the computer's memory? Without the code all anyone can do is random guessing. With the codes I can give you a good idea of what is wrong.
I dont remember the code(s) specifically but I do recall each time it either said torque converter and/or speed sensor on the rear axle. I've replaced a few sensor but the tick that has worked to clear the CEL on the trannie is turning left in a gracefull arc at about 15MPH without throttle. Its as if there is some type inertia switch involved
