My 95 psd recently started shuddering on takeoff... Pretty sure its the torque converter. It has a full ATS tranny with 5 star t/c and all the goodies installed by the previous owner (warranty not transferable). Its only got about 25k on the trans but they have been far from easy miles lol.
Symptoms:
If i hold the brake and keep the truck stopped while holding the throttle its totally smooth, not until the truck starts moving that the shudder begins.
It shudders worse the more power i put to it.
Does it in first gear and second gear takeoffs.
Goes away at about 10 mph or once the speed catches up with the rpm.
Any ideas?
I've seen this several times with the exact same symptoms. It is the u-joints.
That's what I thought also but I checked the driveline and didn't see any play in any of the joints... Do u have any better methods than just putting it in neutral and spinning the shaft back and fourth?
You can't check u-joints with the shaft in the truck. A bad one will look good until it is really, really bad.
Good to know! On other trucks I've never felt anything until they're bad enough where i could see movement by hand. I'll just replace all 3 for good measure then. Thanks for the help!
Ford also have a problem with front yoke splines. There is a TSB telling how to install special grease to lessen the shudder.
Mark is correct about checking ujoints for wear.
Remove the shaft. Many times I have seen ujoints rusted solid. No movement by hand in the vehicle but take the shaft out and the ujoint can't be moved.
