07 F150 Heater Problems

I'm having heating problems with my 2007 F150 King Ranch. It has the 5.4 motor. The heater won't heat up when driving, but when sitting the heater functions normally. The temp gauge stays normal the whole time. Both hoses to the heater core seem warm/hot to the touch and I can change the temp to cold/ac and it blows cold air. Is this indicative of a thermostat issue or is there something else it could be?

The thermostat is likely stuck open. Most Fords with gauges since the mid 90s have used switches instead of actual sending units, making the gauge more like an analog idiot light, hence the "normal" gauge reading.
Get a laser thermometer and measure the temperature of the water outlet on the engine.

Thanks for the info, I'll switch out the thermostat. Hopefully it's not too hard to get to.

Does the air flow change by itself too? From Defrost to Vent to Floor?

Okay---thanks for that then. I was thinking the blend door could be acting up but it would seem the t'stat very well might be the issue now.

Hope its nothing too serious.

I'll keep you posted, I'm going to switch out the thermostat and go from there. Hopefully that solves the problem, don't really want to mess with the blend door, sounds like that might be a real project.

Doesnt sound like thermostat. The idiot gauge thing only applies to oil pressure. JWA has it right, its more like the doors that control airflow over the heater core. This can be moderate or hard to repair, depending upon how much of the dash has to come apart. These systems used to be cable or vacuum actuated, probably electric on a modern vehicle, so the control switch may also be the problem.

Good point Jim!

I changed my '00 E250 blend door and motor without having to remove the entire dashboard as the factory manual says.

Knowing the short cut makes this far less of a hassle. Individual replacement parts are available since that blend door issue is kinda normal.

Of course the temp control or the drive motor itself could also be at issue.

None of this is as easy to swap out as the t'stat--I'm still hoping that's all this might be.

If the blend door was the issue, it wouldn't change between being parked and going down the road. My Explorer has a bad blend door actuator, and I get max heat any time the system is on (except max a/c since that shuts off coolant flow) regardless of speed.

The fact that the temp gauge doesnt move points to air or coolant flow within the heating system. Depending upon what position the air control door(s) are stuck could result in strange behavior.
