I found that marking the balancer with a red paint marker helped a lot.

I did pretty much the same thing with my 460, but landed on 14 degrees. I can imagine a little better performance (had been at 8 degrees), but I can't swear it's really any different. I haven't filled up again since I changed timing so I don't know what it did there. But with the mileage I was getting I'd have needed to fill up today and it looks like I still have a couple of days of gas left, so it looks like a pretty substantial improvement in mileage. We'll see!
