I'm trying to find out the payload capacity of the 2000 f250 I just bought. I took the gvwr 8800lbs and subtracted the curb weight 5665lbs. = 3135lbs
Does that mean I can carry 3135 lbs total ( gas, people, payload)?
Did I do that right or am I way off on how I did it?
catscale.com...you can find the closest to you. Most likely you are finding the dry weight. Not what it is actually with you, fuel, tools or whatevery in it.
So load up like you normally roll and hit the scale and find out.
Then subtract that off of your door cert.
Keep in mind that tires and their capacity are also limiting factors.
That is the book. Not how yours in configured and certainly not how you yourself roll down the road. Take it as a starting point. You know you weight at least that much.
My truck curbs at something like 6200# on paper, in the real world it weighed in at 8300#. Weigh the truck on a scale, it's the only way to know.
But in general you're right. Roughly speaking (to avoid the endless cacophony of state-by-state law differences), weight the truck on a Cat scale, and you'll get front axle, rear axle and total. Keep the axle weights under the GAWRs on the VIN tag, keep the total weight under the GVWR from the VIN tag, and you're golden no matter where you are if you're running stock-equivalent rated tires. It'll probably be depressing, the 8800# rating on 99-04 4x4 F250s was stupidly low. If you find out you're over weight, post up what state you live in, and we can cut through the noise about which state can do what with license plates and capacities and tell you what you can do about it, if anything.
Cat scales at truck stops are easy to use if you never have before. Pull up onto and put the front wheels on the 1, the rear wheels on the 2, go push the button, say "weigh" when the person asks, then go inside to the fuel desk and they'll trade you the weight ticket for $8.
