Welcome from another newbie. Somewhere on here is an acronym/common abbreviation list, it is helping to decipher most of the technical stuff on the site. I just keep reading and learning more everyday. Congrats on the new truck and enjoy it.
You've lost me already. What is the .50cent mod and what does it do? Bought the truck to pull a fifth wheel (which I haven't got yet. Had to get the horse before I got the cart). Only thing I see as a potential problem right now is it doesn't want to start when it's cold outside (40 and below). I changed the oil in the HPOP tank but not in the channels. Any other suggestions?
Let us know where you live, will help in what to suggest for cold weather, etc.
Do the maintanence type stuff to get going, and be ready to read a lot
How many miles on it?
Do you know the history of it?
Whuuh? The oil is all one and the same - it circulates. 5-40 (CJ-4 for diesels) makes the truck far easier to start when it's cold outside. You need 4 gallons (yup.. I said gallons) and an oil filter to change your oil. Welcome to diesel and to FTE!
Theoretically that's true. But the oil in the channels does not "recycle" as well as it should (or so I've been told by a trusted Ford diesel mechanic.

Okay, I'll bite.
So how does the oil in the channels get changed? What does your ford buddy suggest?
He suggested pulling out the plugs on either the front or rear of the heads and draining them then flushing with fresh oil. I think I figured out my problem though thanks to FTE! Sounds more like a glow plug relay problem.

Yeah on the cold start/gp system.
IMHO, pulling head plugs for draining oil is a bit, didriculas. There are a couple of quarts that will stick to sides of everything inside the motor, so there will always be some "dirty" oil in the motor. Some here say to change the hpop resovoir oil, most don't, no problems.

That's why I didn't do it. I don't mind working on it IF I know what I'm doing.

Read read read... the first couple of threads at the top of the section where this thread is located... you will find the common mods, tech pages, acronyms, etc... links to links that will expand your mind.
Before long... you will know exactly what you are doing...
X2 what the other guys said... i dont bother with oil rails/hpop reservoir either at oil changes...
Welcome to FTE...
I hope you stick around and become a part of The Brotherhood!
I change the oil in the HPOP reservoir... but I have the tool to make it easy.
Ok... ok...
I have a special tool too and i did change it on my last job... but...
I was changing from delvac 15-40 dino to T6. Otherwise i dont worry about it...

haha, I was just about to suggest to check the GPR (glow plug relay), I am fairly new to this site and my first vehicle I have ever owned is a 2002 F-250 CrewCab 4x4 (gray one in my garage) (And I am only 16 years old), yes, you might say a truck might be impractical for my age because I only use it to get to school, but I love driving it and wouldn't switch for anything smaller . But none the less WELCOME TO FTE! This site has already saved me alot of cash on my teenage budget

You aren't SUPPOSED to be practical at your age. It's one of the great things about your age. Hell I'm 43 and I am still not practical...I guess that may be the origin of some of my problems...

Hmm. I guess the days are gone of one's first car being a 54 VW.
