never starts on the first try

Can anybody help. I drive a 06 350 and the dam thing will never start on the first go in the morning it just turns and turns. After I stop and cycle tbe glow plugs some more it starts right up. It almost feels like a fuel problem or somthing. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Is it warm or cold where you park your truck? How many miles on truck? what type of mods have you done to the truck? Do you use any additives in your fuel? When was the last time it was serviced?

You need to get a set of gauges that reads live data like scan gauge II or something similar so you are not flying blind. It could be the FICM is on its way out. If you look in the tech folder there is a FICM test procedure that will show you how to do it with a digital volt meter, Anything less than 45 volts at anytime during KOEO, cranking, idle or WOT or anytime in between indicates a failing FICM.

The 6.0L is pretty good at thrwing a code for a bad glow plug. Definitely check FICM volts as Brett said and make sure your batteries and alternator are healthy. Gauges are highly recommended for times like this when you have to troubleshoot.

FICM = fuel injection control module. and what codes did you have before you cleared them?

Probably codes kicked on from all that cranking. Maybe its just that cold that the cylinders need that extra cycle of heat from the glow plugs to get going. Also try using a synthetic oil. I use AMSOIL in mine. When it gets cold here in Iowa my truck cranks over with no drag plus I plug it in. The Powerstroke definately does not like the cold. lol My motor sounds like its gonna throw a rod when it colds out and it hasn't been plugged in. Sorry can't help you more...

15w40 and the 6.0 do not get along very well under 30 degrees.

I say FICM or wrong oil.

Like data when you try to start would be nice. ICP (Injection Control Pressure)
Is one of the first ones to be looking at and the FICM voltage.
A nice tool to have if you don't have one is the SGII ScanGaugeII : Linear Logic - Home of the ScanGauge
Just ask about programming the Xguages and someone will help.
