I have a 1993 Ford f150. It's 4 wheel drive and has the 5.8 liter motor. The speedometer and odometer went out and it started shifting hard all at once. I also have no power to my dome and glove box lights. I figured it could be the PSOM, so I went to the salvage yard and picked one up. Nothing. Then I thought maybe it was the vehicle speed sensor, so I went to the part store and bought a new one. Nothing. I checked all my fuses and the "instrument illumination" isn't getting any power to it. Before everything went out I think I may have seen a spark from where I had removed a CD player earlier that day. Is it possible that I have a short somewhere? This has to be a wiring problem right? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Sounds like a wiring issue to me...
Assuming you have an E4OD trans, the computer needs a good signal from the PSOM to work correctly. If not, it goes into "limp mode", which results in hard shifts. Is your OD OFF light flashing?
The PSOM is also connected to the RABS module, which is behind the glove box. It's wiring has to go behind the radio... I'd start looking there.
I'm currently having a very similar problem, I have a f150 1994 and it is doing the exact same thing to me. I no longer have a speedometer or odometer, my dome lights don't work, and the truck is bucking like a bull. I have located that there was actually a blown fuse. I replaced it and everything was fine for a couple miles then suddenly when i got back into my truck, it was right back at it. So i replaced the fuse again, it blew immediately. I'm quite frustrated with the situation.. If you find the answer to your problem, PLEASE let me know.
I had the same issue with my 95. The cause of the fuse blowing was the courtesy lights in the sun visors. I unplugged mine (wiring is behind the upper windshield trip panel), and it solved my problem.
JohnathonB: the OD Off light won't always start flashing right away. Pull your codes and post them here. Also, drop the glovebox (open it, squeeze the sides in, it'll swing all the way down) and unplug the antiskid brake computer, it's the black module directly behind the glovebox. See if your problem goes away. My ABS computer had an internal fault (no ABS light on/self-test passed OK) and it was interfering with the PSOM signal to the EEC. Just a quick check, I've heard of others having this problem too.
BigRed1994; you've got an intermittent short somewhere, your fix will be different that the OP's. Which fuse is blowing? Find out EVERYTHING that's on that circuit, disconnect them all, replace the fuse, then start reconnecting one by one until you find which one blows the fuse.
