so i have the "fancy" aluminum rims that look like these and they are starting to get a little surface rust in spots. any idea of how to fix this. is wet sanding them down and recoating them the only option i have and if so what coating should i use?
Do you mean oxidation/corrosion, or brown rust? If it's brown rust, than they certainly are not aluminum wheels. They would be steel.
If they're aluminum, you can indeed just wet sand the corrosion away with some 600 grit or something like that, then give them a good polish.
Unfortunately, if they're steel you're limited. More than likely they would have been chrome plated, and the only way to fix rust like that would be to have them stripped down and re-plated.
Those wheels are indeed chrome steel. Try using chrome polish on them after washing them really good with Dawn. You can also try really fine steel wool before polishing.
i did try dish soap and it took some of the small stuff off. do i have to replate or anything if i use steel wool or will i be okay if i am gentle with it. now that i think about it i do believe they are chrome
i am posotive that it is brown rust. it had some in other spots and i was suprised that most of it came off with soap and a scrub brush. do you think chrome polish and rust remover would be a good idea
Try thie stuff called "never dull" first. It's wadded up cotton in a can soaked in some kind of compound. You will be amazed how much it will take off. If that doesn't work, use steel wool, gently.
I used this stuff called Gord's Polish about a year and a half ago. My rims were covered with corrosion and brake dust. You apply it using #0000 steel wool. Works amazingly. I haven't applied another coat since the first time I used it and my rims still look as good as they did when I first applied it.
This is before the polish:
Right after:
And as of yesterdays washing:
All I do to clean them is hose them off. That's how well the stuff works against brake dust.
And to top it all off, here's a video of the stuff being used on a wheel like ours:
