Has something to do with the steering collum ....
I called up My nearest For dealer and asked them about it..
I said if it is no big deal then I don't care to fix it and they told me I really should because when Ford makes a recall and is paying for it all then it is serious....
Get it fixed..It's free you don't have to pay a dime...
Hi Folks, I posted on this problem a few months ago. Then I left for an overseas assignment. Well I get back and guess what? I read in the paper that Ford is recalling all 1997 F-150's and 250's including the SUV.
What happened to my rig was the steering started getting loose. I poked around the usual, pitman, idler etc. What it ended up being is the bolt that holds the steering shaft to the steering box was not tightened correctly at the factory. The splines on the shaft were virtually worn away.
Very dangerous.
I replaced it and the steering is tighter than I can remember.
All I can tell anyone who might suspect the steering is not as precise as it should be is to get it to Ford ASAP.
My 97 f150 steering has been screwed up for a long time so now I guess I know why. (it isn't the tires)
150K miles and I drive along a lot of dangerous cliffs and ravines.
Wonder how many people have died from this?????
None so far Ford claims. The tip off for me was when I'd be driving down a straight patch of highway. You see-saw the steering wheel back and forth about two inches without changing directions. Also very sensitive to cross winds. That is why I first thought it was the idler or other pieces. 125k when I became aware of it.
Well I picked my truck up today from the Ford place....
Steers great...I never noticed the problem but they did work on it well and got the job done good..Plus was free so I can't complain..If you have a 97 I would get it checked out...It isn't any cost to the owner...
Just took mine in for steering repair recall and they told me there is a fuel line recall also for the 97f150.
Last night I opened up the hood on my truck and grabbed the steering shaft and it felt as though it could fall off....it was really loose feeling.
Let you know tomorrow.
Just called today for my appointment. The service manager told me they just have to check the shaft. He said that all the ones he has seen so far were OK. I'll share my experience.
Just got mine back from the dealership. They said my steering and my fuel lines checked out OK.
The service manager told me about the fuel line RECALL when I got there.
