I'm interested in buying a 1975 F-700. The guy who is selling it tells me it has a 370 motor. I didn't think they came out until 1977 or 1978. Can someone tell me what engine options were available in 1975? Thanks Pat.
Should have been the XD series.. a FT design by a different name. I took the time to scan the XD engine brochure some time ago, should come up with a search of this 2+ ton forum.
You can also go to photobucket.com directly and view several older Ford brochures - my user name there is dmanlyr as well
Wiki wiki wrong as usual, 370 & 429 (7 valve cover bolts) introduced in 1979.
FT engines (5 valve cover bolts) cancelled at the end of the 1978 model run.
XD: Could be a 1975/76 361 2V or 1975/78 361 4V (4th digit of VIN: engine code E); 1975/78 391 4V (VIN engine code F).
1973/78 330 2V Medium Duty (VIN engine code C); 1973/78 330 2V Heavy Duty (VIN engine code D); 1973/74 361's are not listed as XD's nor are 1973/74 391's.
More FoMoCo confusion: 361 and 391 detuned for smog beginning in 1975, were then called 359 and 389. Try and find either listed in a Ford truck parts catalog! No VIN engine codes, no parts listed.
Thanks for the replies. I bought the truck, it has a 361 4V. It is thirsty 5 miles per gallon. Better than my 1985 with 370 4V, at 4 miles per gallon ( imp. gallon.) Nothing a tune up won't cure, had to drive with choke part way out. I would like a vin decode should I start a new thread. Thanks Pat.
