Thanks whitewhale, glad to hear from someone that has experienced vehicles with before and after the change in the fuel filter mount. My truck was manufactured in mid February 2012 so I guess the change occurred sometime before that.
Thanks AresSD for your response. The procedure you describe is exactly the way I thought the filter should be installed. And you are probably right about not getting the filter aligned properly. Do you recall whether or not the vertical slot goes all the way to the top of the housing? As I recall it does not and maybe I missed it because the filter is so tight I really could not aim it properly to hit the slot.
I don't think it goes to the top of the housing...if I recall it would slide into the housing some, then it stopped, then I would turn it to line up to the slots. But.....I can't say that with 100% certainty.
I would like to thank everyone that provided me with the information I was looking for. Lots of people on this site that are more than willing to share their knowledge with people having a problem. Hope I can do the same for some of you sometime.
I spent an hour trying to get this sucker off and gave up. Took down to dealer and they changed it out on the spot. 5 minutes and he was done. My truck build date is Dec 2011. Rotate the filter counterclockwise until the peg aligns with the release
slot is the difficult part as its on rear side which you cannot see and have to feel with your fingers. Not the ideal design IMHO but I guess with some practice its rather simple job.
2012 does not have a clamp. It does not twist easy, nor does it pull up easy. It is hard to know when you have twisted it to the vertical slot because of how tight it is in the first place. I used large filter pliers, inspection camera to look for the clamp that did not exist; and finally to confirm I had rotated it enough before the second challenge of pulling it out.
New filter went in just as difficult as getting old out. I wiped down bracket and wiped exterior of new filter with a little lubricant. I wish I had the clamp with bolt.
