Another oil thread...

So, im here to complain/explore why it is my Rotella oil breaks down so bad? I change the oil every 3000(ish) and after 2500 miles or so the injectors rattle like hell and it doesn't have the power it should. I'm not burning anymore that 1/2-3/4 quart between changes unlesss I'm heavy hauling the entire 3000 miles then maybe 1-1 1/2 quarts (partially being vacuumed through the ccv). I change the oil and voila, quiet restored and it feels like a new engine. Anyone else experience this phenom? anybody like Delo? I read some old threads about oil, but I can't get some of the oil brands around here so I'm interested in alternative common oils.

Delo is good.

Any non synthetic based oils will break down quick.

I get the same issues you do.

Stuff thats inside the oil helps to break it down as well.

If your into blowing black smoke around to impress everyone, your just killing your oil and breaking it down faster.
That soot gets into the oil and whamo, its gone.

I hot rod a bit out of insanity, but not showing off ..
My truck burns pretty clean, unless I'm loaded (trailer, not me) and under WOT then I get a bit of black smoke, otherwise clean. what do you think of synthetics? my experience has been mixed, and I don't want to develop leaks.

Synthetics clean out the junk in the system, so sometimes you get leaks.

I had no issues personally.

The oil leak in my 6.0l got worse when I switched to synthetic. The thing that I dont like about them is the price. Dino oil is way cheaper typically.

My 6.0l did run 10x better with synthetic though.

For what it's worth I also run Delo and like it.

I could see a 6.0 liking synthetic because of the tight injector clearances. Price doesn't bother me as much as having a huge loss of power at 2k miles on new oil.

I would say my truck works the oil as hard as any, I run rotella, and have no power loss ever. Change at 3k or so.

I bought Motorcraft for my next oil change. I have Rotella in it now with right at 3000 miles on it, and it is as clean as can be.

I run rotella t6 synthetic, if my truck isn't loaded or towing it doesn't move. I change the oil every 2 to 3 years (about 30,000 miles) sampled and tested every 5,000 miles and a new filter every 5,000 miles. I can not tell a difference when the oil is changed.

I ran rotella for years and the tests always came back that the oil was sheared down in weight. Same with rotella T6. I switched to Schaeffer's 7000 and my tests come back good and the oil is not sheared down. Joey at terminator said he like Schaeffer's too. Not to start a oil war, I find that very hard to believe helifixer.

I dont get very in depth into the oil analysis or the discussion as I dont read into the oils very far. I typically go with what is popular here at FTE and it seems to have worked out for me.

About 3 years ago Rotella T6 was the bees knees for the 6.0l. Lately though many have been jumping ship here at FTE and switching. I've fallen out of the 6.0l world since I bought my 7.3 so I cant recommend what they like these days, this is just word on the street (of FTE).

I find that very hard to believe, are you talking about your big rig? Even then most shops change the oil 10-30k depending on the engine and usage factors, mind you those trucks are at speed - not stop and go. Any novices reading this should not think that 30k is safe on a 7.3. The filtration and engine design isn't suited for such...

I have a couple friends with 7.3's and they go 5k between changes - one of the trucks has 200k And the other has 335k. the truck with 335k has the injectors screaming when it has 5k on the oil. I'm gonna give a synthetic a try this time and hope for the best.

If you run a bypass filter, it's easy to run high mileage with synthetics.

Schaefers is 18 a gallon and wont break down like the other oils.

Glenn uses it in everything.

I know a guy running amsoil with a remote bypass goes 30kplus.
He's using the one where you screw the remote on to the filter head and it moves the filters to the rail for the bypass and regular filter.

He works his truck too.

Running good filters and a bypass really makes your oil last longer.

I could definitely see getting a lot more mileage with an elaborate filter setup, and perhaps a better oil cooler if you're running hard.. That would have been a key element for him to mention.

Our trucks cool very very well.

There are some great bypass setups out there.

I like the Racor setup, you can buy the same filters and head under the oil guard name.

It's a staged filter down to 5 microns actual I think.
