well I am ok with that, I keep a records in my software that I run my business with to track my mileage and lab one tracks my oil analysis.

Any novices reading this should not think that 30k is safe on a 7.3. The filtration and engine design isn't suited for such...

I have a couple friends with 7.3's and they go 5k between changes - one of the trucks has 200k And the other has 335k. the truck with 335k has the injectors screaming when it has 5k on the oil. I'm gonna give a synthetic a try this time and hope for the best.

ok so I guess the DR. degree didn't come with an engineers degree.

but for me it is pretty simple, every 5,000 miles I send 4 ounces of oil to the lab, (all of my vehicles) the next day I get an e mail with the report. if all is good I put a new filter on and add 2 quarts of oil and repeat in 5,000 miles.
as for trucks I have 3 7.3L powerstrokes. my '97 is at 221,000 miles, as for engine maintenance I have changed the glow plugs and one water pump. I change it's oil about every 3 years. my '99 service truck is over 330,000 miles, spent most of it's life in Texas in the oil fields as a hot shot truck (well maintained I am sure) that one I changed the oil when I bouth it 3 years ago and I just changed it last month. the 2000 excursion I have only had for 1 year and is on it's original oil change since I bought it.

just a note the delivery service I use, one of the drivers was at 50,000 miles on his oil on his 7.3 powerstroke when he sold it.

Do you do any tuning at your shop, I'm not that far away? (probably a stupid question) I'm trying to get on John Woods dyno and live tune mine but he is waiting on a emulator.

im running the valvoline super blue .just changed it at 5k.it was getting the same 17mpg in town as when I put it in. HOnestly the oil was still clean and I just felt terrible about it having 5k. I never let anything go any more than 3k...500 on my model T. wifes edge with synthetic even only goes 3k.

So far I am real happy with what I am running but dont tow much since i bought this truck.but soon it will be getting worked plenty.

I have 322k on her and 317k when I changed it after purchase.

Now now, there's no need for all of us to get our britches in a wad, I did an oil change today and the shell rotella 15-40 was shot @ 3712 miles... There was no need for an engineer or lab to tell me it was broke down beyond where it should be. I exchanged it for a fresh batch of rotella (until I figure out a better alternate) and the injectors are a good 30% quieter, power restored - pulls like brand new all over again. So regardless of your experience, my truck IS experiencing some rapid oil breakdown. I'm only inquiring to see what oil other guys are running with good success @ a typical 3-5k interval with a stock filtration setup. Thanks to all for your intel.

Rotella T 15-40 in eveything I own, never had a problem with it, synthetic caused oil leaks, Mobil ran like crap.

Just a thought I have about the 3K oil changes....You put 4 quarts of oil in your car and change it at 3k, but you put 3 GALLONS of oil in your truck and still change it at 3K??? basic math tells me you should be able to go almost 9K before the oil is dulited out to the same ratio....

I have no problem going 5-7K on my oil.

I used to run 5k all the time on my rotella before I found this forum. So for most of the trucks life it ran 5k intervals. I've heard Jim and others suggest changing at 3k, as its better for the injectors, and the oil isn't broken down as bad. However, when I sent my injectors in to Jim for a budget build stage one upgrade, they needed no extra work at 140k on them. I do 3k now anyway as its not that often for me. My experience is up to 5k and I had no problems/issues. I never went higher than that.

It's not about quantity, all of the oil is still being used... That'd be like saying you get 30k miles out of your tires but since it's a dually you outta get 50% more mileage because of the extra tires... They're all still rolling down the road at the same time.

Doc, if your oil is breaking down that quick you may have some issues going on inside the engine. You mentioned 1 - 1 1/2 quarts going through your CCV, maybe you have some ring problems creating excessive blow by and your burning your oil up. I would get an oil analysis done on your oil with 3000 miles on it, and also maybe do a compression test and see how your compression is. I have 3000 on my Rotella right now, and had the GPs and one injector out the other day, and the oil was very clean and golden colored still.

How are you doing Rod? As your name implies 444 cu vs say my VW TDI at 115 cu. The PSD is almost four times as big and takes three times the amount of oil. So, IMHO, your basic math doesn't hold up to this discussion. Again, I'm just voicing my opinion. I change mine every 7K but also run a FS2500 bypass and do oil samples. This equals two oil changes a year. I run straight syn in the VW's and change them every 5K.

Not to beat a dead horse but as long as its CJ-4 rated it's good to go in a VW.

I'm still rolling. as you can see in my sig I JUST got a Jetta, it was an insurance buy-back from a friend of mine, he rear-ended a semi @20MPH. whole new front end was needed, took it out for the inaugural beat down yesterday and put 12 long miles on it.....

I guess if you look at the oil change issue of C.I.D. VS oil volume then 3K on a TDI VS 3K on the PSD its mostly a wash. 4 times the CID and they have 3 times the oil volume.

BUT a PSD is also alot harder on oil then the average diesel because of the HPOP. I'll prolly dump the oil out of the TDI at 3K or less just because this is the first time its had rotella in it. The second oil change I will prolly stretch 5K out of it.

The HPOP on our trucks destroys regular old style oil far quicker than most other vehicles and other diesels.
