Make sure the spark plugs and wires are in good condition. Let it run and watch the wires at night, if you have any cracks in the they'll light up. Pull a few spark plugs and see what they look like.
I've heard several people say they "tap" on injectors to get them working right. I guess that works of they're clogged or stuck or something. If you do that, tap lightly with a small wrench. Don't go getting your hammer out, haha. This may not be a long term fix, but it would tell you that an injector is bad if you can free it up for a while by tapping on it.
How is it running bad? Bad idle, slow acceleration, shaking? More info may give us a better idea of what's going on.

Sorry for the loss of your son. Be proud of him and his service.
While it's a good idea to pull error codes, you won't get one if an injector has quit. What you could do is check the resistance of each injector. Typically when they fail resistance goes to infinity; otherwise should be ~16 Ohms.
